Hey mate,
Only been to Lombok once. Stayed at Heaven on the Planet in the South East corner. Its pretty remote, well away from the tourist areas so no shopping/other activities for the wife but great place all the same. Highly recommend it.
Inside and Outside Ekkas right in front with free boat. Bit expensive but great food, location and staff.
We were actually there for the kitesurfing at Kaliantan, just around the corner, but the surf also pumped the entire 10 days we were there in July.

A lot of petty theft going on in Kuta Lombok so be careful.
Even from your rooms where you think everything is safe.
Had some friends robbed by the security who had keys to all the rooms and was helping himself.
Money, passports, cameras etc
I highly recommend going but lock up your stuff.

Lombok is a great place, good waves all over the south. Kuta is close to heaps of good consistant waves. Agree with TimKay, be secure! That time of year you might get waves in the north, Sengiggi has more for the missus (markets, restaurants) and sick waves when its on. Mostly locals surfing, always good vibes. I love the place!!!

Kuta is more central and bigger choice of accommodation / food you can organise day trip to Ekas and there are a couple of ways to get there by boat.

Then you have local waves around Kuta and then out to Mawi. Don't know if it's changed but don't travel after dark and take care in daylight.

Plenty nice home stays or classy accom in Kuta and the Novotel just down the road ( thinking of the Mrs) Ekas not so much unless you stay at the surf camp there - Heaven on Earth I think....not too many positive reports though.
stay in Kuta - all other spots are available via scooter or boat from Kuta.
if you want a surf guide check out Ceria Surf...Win is a ripping bloke as is his side kick Takim ( they mainly work with Japanese but if they have room they will fit you in.
if you want a little bit out of the way but close to great wave and cheap check out Are Guling Bungalows - Tony (Aussie) owns the place and some young locals will be your hosts ( again Tinah is a ripping young fella .....I have been staying here every year for the last 5 years.....wet season wave but it usually has good conditions March - June

The left viewed from the Bungalows

The road down to Are Guling
that hill (brown bit) used to hide the wave- mined it for gold removed the top of the hill in less than 3 months!!!
