The people of Nias are their own worst enemy.
I remember after the earthquakes a truck load of money was raised to give back to the local fisherman to maintain a livelihood
The money was given to the community leaders who in turn bought boats to run surf charters to the Hinako's.
Fisherman got nothing.
Disappointing but with all the tourism they now need roads...
I sort of wrote Nias off about 12-15 years ago.
18-20 years ago I surfed it epic for a week with maybe 6-8 guys out sometimes 3-4
16 years ago went back and in a couple years there was more homestays and 10-15 in the lineup every day at all times, still not too bad
around 12 years ago went through there for a couple days whilst travelling further..... there was 20-30 guys in the water and humans everywhere, rubbish on the beaches people scamming and scheming and it had turned into a zoo,
there is no no management system in place, everyone is asking for a bribe and cash ,, the development had started and foreigners were setting up homestays and pushing out locals
everything which brought me there earlier was gone and replaced with a human zoo.
people who have been there I. The last five years I know confirm etiquette in and out of the lineup is gone and what's happening now is a nail in the coffin of places to take the kids too and say yeah it's just like how it was when I surfed it your age
It needs a surf management plan it needs the money the local mafia take to be put into the community
It needs proper sewers and less rubbish
it needs a lot of things and a road isn't one of them
I like how we're lecturing them and Australia's preeminent point break Kirra has a major road right on the point with bulk traffic plus man made groyne plus sand pumping just around the corner
we are not so au natural are we
Nias epitomises the term surf ghetto
Thieves in the water and on land
Prostitutes, drugs, rip offs a plenty.
Locals that get blind drunk and look to kill someone with a machete.
I love the Indonesian people but Nias is a complete kettle of fish.
A parting comment from a local was that I must give a gift to the Nias surfing community. This was after I had gear stolen the night before. Yeah No worries
Great wave blah blah blah but the place is like a human experiment gone wrong.
I visited a few times around 95/96 haven't been back since.Even then the local people were criminal - reports of people being robbed women threatened and even myself being threatened and told they would be reported to police if i didn't pay a bribe.
Sounds like its not changing
Still sounds safer than some of the redneck towns I have visited in WA lol
Had some long haired old chick dressed in leather yelling at me " two men enter, one man leaves "
I've been but once. I reckon I really lucked out. It was around 20 years ago and there was no easy way in. At the time no ferry or boat into Teluk Delam due to tribal rivalries... a ships captain being murdered for sleeping with a villagers wife. You had to catch a ferry from Sibolga to Gunungsitoli and drive overland muddy roads from the other side of the island. Meaning.... we had the wave to ourselves- were the only westerners in town for most of the 3 weeks I was there. Had a return trip planned the following year.... depart Sept 12, 2001 from the US. Was the day following the World Trade Center was bombed, flight was cancelled. Never been back since.
The people of Nias are their own worst enemy.
Straight up- PEOPLE are our own worst enemy. Never ceases to amaze and sadden me. Nias hasn't a monopoly on this, that is for sure.
