Hi,

Ive recently been going surfing 4-5 times a week and are progressing very quickly. at the moment i am riding a 6'4 x 21" x 3" Channel Islands 'Motorboat' As i understand this board is very good for small flat waves, however i am starting to do turns and carves and it seems i need a board that is more all round for more varying conditions.

I am 6'1 weigh about 70kgs and are fit and at a beginner intermediate level.

I would like another Al Merrick board and there are no local shapers in my area so big brands are the go!

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Go find a shaper, take your board and tell him what you like and dislike. Equipment wise this will progress you far far faster than getting off the rack boards. It wll be worth the drive. Where are you in Australia? If there are waves then generally there will be a local shaper.

He said there aren't any shapers nearby him.

At your height, I think you'll want to keep the length, but potentially go for something like Fred Rubble or Proton models if you something that is good with turns while being a little less forgiving than the Motorboat. That said, I've been surfing beaches that get to head high on a great day for 12 years with boards of a similar calibre to the motorboat and I've been perfectly happy. If you want to keep on improving at the rate you are claiming to, stick with the motorboat for a while longer. When you're comfortable at turning and can throw spray with the motorboat, getting a board like that mentioned will be a breeze and I think you'll have a better experience that way. Save your money until you rip on the motorboat dude.

If a pro like this guy can have fun on a motorboat, you can too.

I should also add that for the best part of my surfing life I've used a 6'1 DHD jellyfish. I still find myself satisfied by it after many years of riding it. Our boards are similar in the way that they were shaped with similar conditions in mind, so just don't discount what you already have. I also have a DHD D2 which is a step up that you might also like to research. If you're after just the big names only, definitely research DHD.

Sparki, i was looking at the fred rubble and maybe planning to get a 6'2 or a DFR. My motorboat is good in small conditions because it has virtually no rocker and the single to large double helps.

Yeah im not looking to get it for a while still but i still want some piece of mind to know what i want, its a big choice!

I am aware of DHD and ive also been looking at JS however Al merrick still seems to be my favourite. I will certainly have a look at those boards also.

I might be going against the grain here, but get onto gumtree or even the buy & sell section of this website and buy a few cheap boards. I reckon if you are going to spend $700 on your DHD or Merick, you'd be better off buying a $200 second hand board and giving it a crack and seeing what you think. If you believe you want a bit of extra thickness etc, find one with those dimensions. For the equivalent $700 odd bucks you'd be able to try out a few boards.

Also, normally I pump blokes up and so forth. But as a beginner, I think the term 'carving' can be saved for people whole genuinely rip. I wouldn't say I carve waves up. I'm not having a crack mate, but I think you mean floating up and down the face perhaps. Either that, or you certainly have progressed very quickly!

Rubbish. If there are waves there are shapers, I reckon he just doesn't know where they are. And, like I said, the drive would be worth it. Stock boards are a far cry from a custom board tuned to a particular surfer, and, more importantly, that second board from a shaper once a relationship and design parameters are established.

I would almost guarantee there is a shaper within an hour and a half drive of him, but then again maybe a quality board isn't that important to him. Or you.

Small design differences make big performance differences and stock boards are a general average. They are okay. But would you buy a hyundai when you could have a honda? Same size but the quality is just so much more.

If you do go for a custom board, get a heavier glass job. It will make bugger all difference to your surfing and the board will last soooo much better - yet another thing that stock boards don't do.

Further, shapers in the same area may do a better board over the phone and delivered by mail. I have friends who order boards from shapers 700km from their home towns.

Having said all that, the idea of getting a bunch of second hand boards is certainly appealing for a beginner. It will give you an idea of what things you like in a board. For example, me and a single concave just don't get on, but I started surfing with single fins, twins and v bottoms. Nowdays a single into double is the get go in my small boards. Fins can also change a board big time - play with them. Cheaper than a new board.

Yeah, i did get my first board for a bargin (its second hand) and it is a perfect shortboard to start on! Ahaha yes i dont think i defined carving enough, but thanks for the advice

The drip,

I do have many shapers here in victoria that are within an hours drive even, ive had a look at many of their boards and considering my ability and the fact that its only my second board, going all that way for a custom board seems abit much. But i will certainly purchase from them later down the track!

I also have taken out one of my fins to try twin just for a change so im already onto that one!
