Heading there on a family trip mid Nov - I don't know too much about the east coast, only that wet season is often better and Keramas is north of ND.
I've looked at the spots around ND online, they seem a little sketcky and 500m offshore but I'm sure they're not that bad (?).
Anybody have experience of the waves around ND? I'm a capable surfer, day tripper to the SW when it's on and been to Bali (other coast) a few times..happy in the 6ft range.
We're staying at the Grand Hyatt for some location reference - cheers.
Mate you will be surrounded by wave locations and any that are outside of your paddle range have boats working whenever there's a surfer wanting a ride. Fun times for you however just if it's been raining avoid areas with drains, creeks and rivers.??

Thanks froghoppa, naive questions perhaps but how come stay away from the drains etc after rain - the filth?
Whats the score with boat fees, how much do you pay and do you pay for the return leg up front, or take the cash with you and wave a boat down to get back in (haha)??
How's that all work? Cheers
Drains / Rivers = rubbish n sewerage = ecoli = sickness and ear infections
boat fees paid up front 50k eachway in some places Nusa Dua
$10 a surf.....can be worth it though
the paddle in isn't worth it..it's a long way...much further than it looks especially if the tides n currents are working against you
50k total in others and Kuta
Thanks Mocha, I guess $10 a surf is ok when you put it that way..even if it's just offshore.
I'm guessing there are no set times surfing - with them continually going back and forth, just flag your particular boat down when you've had enough?
Can not talk for ND (I was always told they only drop you off there you paddle in strangely i have never surfed ND) but at the airport reefs you normally tell the Balinese how long you are going to be a tip is as you paddle away from the boat stop and look back at the boat and colours so you can recognise your boat again.
Good advice that Ifocus, sux when you forget to check ya boat
You can pay $5 (50k Rp) each way. Sometimes I paddle out & flag a boat down coz its there when I'm thinking of heading in, sometimes I'll get a boat out & paddle in. Low tide on the South ends not hard but highly recommend booties & watching for urchins.
Check out the shell store about 300m on the beach north of Pantai Gegar. If you haggle a bit & spend about $50 (500k Rp) you can get some really nice big tropical shells.
There are no rivers or anything running dirty water into the Nusa Dua area or anywhere South between the airport runway right around to Sanur apart from the rare occasion there are heavy rainfalls. A few years back there was a heavy rainfall coupled with a plumbing problem at the Mulia that turned Pantai Geger into a river that damaged the warungs. So a few got rebuild with Mulia compensation back then...and at the same time the closed river/creek thing at Dreamland broke its banks & washed away some beach chairs. There were/was/are some funny videos posted on youtube a local showed me 2 years ago from then but yeah like I said its rare & concern about infections is not an issue. Only other place I know is Ulu's but that happens in wet season when you should be focussed on the East side due to the wind being Westerly. Thats the time you here about heaps of rubbish washing onto Kuta beach because of the wind. I think things have improved a lot since Bali has stopped using plastic bags but a lot of it comes from Java & the past.
Saw a couple of foreingers with pick up sticks picking up cigs n stuff around a Beach at Sanur that was awesome. Things are improving I think.
