Heading up to Bali with the family next week. Rather than lounge around the pool all day, I'm keen to get the young bloke (aged 9) into some surfing lessons for a few hours each morning, and I'll tag along. He's keen, he's a strong swimmer and does nippers etc. so he is ready for it.

We're staying in Nusa Dua so I'd rather not trek over to Kuta each day, and I believe there are some decent reef breaks right out front.

Any advice, tips, recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

There are a few options but check with your hotel as allot of them will arrange something for you. Check out www.odysseysurfschool.com/surfing-lessons/, or there are a couple of guys between the Grand Hyatt and the Melia (Jl. Pantai Mengiat) that seem to be quite popular.

not sure about Nusa Dua area but back to where you don't want to be there's some really good options.
odyssey are a good one.
Best trained on the island are Ripcurl School of surf, and they train all levels and a brilliant with little people but unfortunately they are in Legian. May be worth giving them a call they may have someone over Nusa Dua way?

Been in touch with Odyssey and another one called Pro Surf School. They both say that lessons are only available in Kuta.

It seems that Nusa Dua is not that suitable for beginners.

So we'll make the drive each day through the traffic to Kuta then...

I'll post again on how it goes and hopefully some pics too.

Another option ,, there are a few 'freelancers' floating around, and if you're prepared to pay they'll come to you etc.. PM me if interested and I can give you details. I know they'll do it for adults ,, not sure about kids.. I had a guy up there I know, look after one of my female employees. Very trustworthy and reliable. She had a ball. On her feet in the first 'lesson'. He knows all the breaks/conditions etc.

OK so we made the journey over to Kuta which was around 30min from Nusa Dua. The young fella had a lesson and got straight up in the knee-high reforms on a soft top. Conditions were very easy for kids starting out but it was bloody crowded!

Walking along the beach in Nusa Dua during the week we discovered that there are at least a couple of places with a decent range of surf boards to hire, but they are fairly casual affairs with no websites or formal bookings. The best seems to be "Black Rock", which also offers lessons and is tucked into the "Beach Club at Courtyard by Marriott", next to Grand Hyatt.

There is an easy wave right out front and we have had some fun there for the last few days. This spot doesn't involve a long paddle unlike a lot of the spots at Nusa Dua.

I have been eyeing off a nice looking right out the front of Club Med which works on a lower tide so we may give that a crack today.

Hopefully this is helpful for anyone else with kids heading to Nusa Dua over the holidays.

Awesome!! Great age to get him into into it.

The right out the front of Club Med is called Sri Lanka, wait 'til you see what it does at six foot. Hope you have a great trip.
