Hey guys

i'm a relatively new kook from Perth, been surfing on a foamie for a few months now and looking to transition into a shorter board and wanted to ask a few questions.

I weigh around 70kg and was looking for a board with around 35lt of volume (current foamie is over 60 lt).

Firstly, I was wondering what the concensus on the best board shape was for Perth waves? I was looking at either a fish or something like the Katana scud but not sure which of the two would be better.

The main question i had tho was whether I should get a board from a big brand (eg Pyzel/Firewire) or get a custom board (eg Katana)? They're both around the same price point and I'm not sure which of the two provides more value. OR should I jst opt for a cheaper board around the $4-500 range for now until I'm more used to the smaller boards and splash more money once I think i can ride a board in the 25-30 lt range?

Thanks in advance

Mate, you pretty much answered your own question.
Go for a cheap 2nd hand board, then go and get a Katana.
Best of luck

I have a Katana Scud in excellent condition, no dings or repairs, not even a deck compression, bamboo deck, carbon rails, futures fins...selling coz I'm thinning out my 12 board quiver to mod my new pajero. I'm selling a few other boards as well. You can have it with fins & leggie for $300

My Katana is a solid build, perfect for your weight/ability/waves

PM if interested, cheers
