is a dedicated foil board like the jp 135 pro much easier to foil on than a cross over board ? I have a fanatic jag 135 and don't want to spend more on a dedicated board if it isn't going to make a lot of difference. Cheers
Main difference is the placement of mast box in relation to foot straps to place the main foil between your feet.
Best with NP foils, but can be used with others.
If you're a compete foil beginner you may not feel an initial difference but through progression any dedicated foil board will give you a much better balance and trim versus a crossover windsurfing board.
I have used the JP 135 with the NP pinkie foil, NP/F4 carbon, Naish thrust and currently using the slingshot foil with 84 infinity wing. Each foil will give you a different performance and it's the wing that's gives you an easier feel.
The JP 135 was really designed with a racing pedigree foil like the F4 or Starboard race foil, hence the reason why the straps are further out on the rail. With a racing foil you'll tend to hike out over the rail.
With a freeride foil like the Naish or Slingshot you'll stand with an upright stance with you back foot more over the center line and really only using the back strap to pinch upwind.
The board is 215 x 86 so plenty of float, width and very stable. I will use this board in super light winds with a 7.0 or 7.8. Anything stronger and I will switch to the slingshot wizard foil board 198 x 78.
Overall you can't go wrong with the JP and if the pocket book will allow it, go for the carbon pro 135. It is very light and will foil up quickly. The construction is very good and has lasted me very well so far.
Thanks for your advice, I've just bought a sb super cruiser and am hoping that will work well with the jp 135 pro ?
Definitely better boards for the super cruiser than the 135. As mentioned above. The Jp wants race foils. Not freemove.
If you are buying new then go for a board suited better to the super cruiser.
I owned a 135 with the 2019 flight Al. It was a great combo. Very fast but preferred larger cambered sails. 7.5 go to size for 10knots.
Now I have a slingshot wizard 105 and fwind foil. And much prefer it. In the same wind I'm on a flat 5.5m which from my experience would have been alot less pleasing on the 135.
I'm a big believer in getting foils matched to the foil. So with a super cruiser I would be looking at the foil X boards from starboard.
2nd best foil jiber in our area, Berkeley Ca., uses 135 Pro with NP Glide and foils thru about 90%.
Used to use the Flight, but switched for easier jibing.
As long as main wing is between the feet, it works, straps or strapless.
Already got the super cruiser so really looking for best board to match with it . Foil x 145 looks good but not available in uk yet . What features on a board would I be looking for to match it to super cruiser ? Sorry to ask so many questions but want to check twice ( or 100 times !) and buy once !

The only foil we have never tested is Starboard! we just don't see them in our neck of the woods, but looking at the shape of it its definitely more like the slingshot (meaning more freeriding). It will work with the JP but maybe look for a board with the back straps further in board or you could take the back straps off the JP?
I agree with Sam, overall its beneficial to get a board and foil brand to match up, after all that's where all the R&D has gone and it may save a few head aches trying to set everything up in the correct position.
One thing we have found is millimeters can make a huge difference (mast base, foil mast location and fuselage position)
is the JP brand new or a killer deal?
It's just a good deal so was tempted but happy to look at other options or wait for foil x 145 if that's the best option

Not really a huge difference in my opinion. I was learning on a Bic Techno 148 then bought the JP135.
I had just as much fun on the Bic and didn't worry about crunching the nose.I'm sure after I progress i'll appreciate the JP more.
I use the JP 135 foil board with Starboard GT-R foils and I love it. I used to use my JP 85 wide slalom board but it doesn't have the width at the back so wasn't as good at controlling the foil and the shorter nose of the foil board makes flying and landing much easier. I'd recommend a foil board.
Won't be long for the foil X to land First shipment due in November. I would definitely wait it out. The Jp will always be a compromise. If you look on the starboard website. The recommended foil for the foil X is the super cruiser. The starboard 150 is the closest in shape/dimension to the jp and they recommend the GTR and race foils with that board not the super cruiser.
The jp135 is more like the sb foil freeride 150 with 85cm width. I tried the supercruiser with the new sb foil x 145 wich is very short and very fat but not so stable like the 85cm boards. If you already own the supercruiser i would listen to starboard and buy the recommended board.
