I have a neilpryde RS flight i really enjoy riding but at 34 k's an hour it starts whistling by 38 it is deafening and I have to back off has anyone encountered this problem if so what can be done to rectify it apart from selling it and buying a different foil it is taking the enjoyment away very quickly there is no visual damage to the mast or wings

Sand paper one side of the trailing edge of the mast with say 180 grit wet / dry paper
rhere is a NP video ie

will make a lot of the whistling go away

Plenty of people have experienced it. I could hear my mate coming from a mile away when he had the AL.
when you sand it you're aiming to reduce the cavitation that occurs at the trailing edge of the foil due to the square edge they've had to leave in manufacture. So if you haven't already try sanding both edges and check that the square edge is actually smaller/rounder.

It may take more than the 3 or 4 runs with the sandpaper he mentioned in the video.

Just tried a couple more one made a thin gasket between the mast and the fuselage and also put some foam up the middle of the mast to try and kill the harmonics and I don't want to say it but it has definitely started to reduce the noise but still any noise when you're foiling is not good

I used to own that piece of... sanding didn't affect the noise.
I stuck a long piece of 1 cmwide sticker on one side of the trailing edge of the mast, et voila silence !!!

Bought a starboard after that and never looked back !

Such a simple fix what a great idea I'm going to give that ago I have had three other foils none of which have made a sound I can't believe that this manufacturing fault has not been dealt with a long time ago it seems that everybody has had this problem with these alloy masts it should come with a warning that states this will cause frustration, headaches and nausea if used as directed

Slingshot aluminum masts do not whistle or howl, or even sing. My three don't anyway.

The AFS-2 stab is a howler/singer. You can suppress that by changing the shape of the trailing edge with careful sanding. There is information out there about how engineers did this on the turbine blades in hydro power plants to extend the life of the blades.

That said, there are foilers who actually LIKE the stab noise of the AFS-2. If you are out on a busy day, or in a race, you can hear them coming. There is something to be said for that.

I have a slingshot setup for Kite foiling on it came with three masts and a front H2 we absolutely awesome setup the only issue is it doesn't have a deep Tuttle box adaptor so I opted for a complete other setup for windsurfing on. just don't know if the kite set up will be strong enough Four windsurfing with I have also had a liquid Force and an Alpine foil none of which made a sound and we're alloy as well

I reckon my brand new Starboard Supercruiser mast is gunna make more like a cracking noise than a whistle (if I ever get round to using it)
What a piece of Sh#t this turned out to be

I have seen that before, and if I remember correctly you should be able to replace that one with a version that has been drilled correctly. If you scour forum.windsurfing33.fr for a bit you'll find some similar pictures and I believe a solution. I believe they are part of a bad series, but im not sure, was a while ago.

Thanx heaps WhiteofHeart found it www.windsurfing33.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=118547
Seems there are a few SB ally masts with the same problem.
Hope others will check theirs before they have an accident with it

Obviously Starboard is aware of this problem and there quality control sux letting this go through without inspection.
Now I've got to go thru the lengthy warranty claim process where I have to pay for postage and I have to prove that the
quote "foil hasn't been adjusted / modified by the customer"
as well as not having the use of it in the mean time.

Sorry for hijacking this thread with my problems, but I'm rather p#ssed off
