Why doesn't Alex sail in the open division?.
He wouldn't get a trophy then.
A minimum of 3 competitors is required to constitute a division.
The other 2 competitor would be grateful that Alex made the effort to go to Sydney on the first day of his school holidays to allow the Freefoil\youth\women division to even exist.

Shouldn't he be at Sail Melbourne.

how does racing with foils work ?
is there a restriction on number or size of of foils/sails/boards
or can you just go open slather ?
For the moment it's open to have as many sailors as possible but we are talking to get some limitations or even a box rule later on (work in progress).
PWA has a gear limitation for next year (board 91cm wide max and sails 10m max. Foil mast 110cm max).
For other races, the eventual box rule would be a formula board, a 9m max sail and one foil...
Why limit it to 9m?
10 m is still 2.5 m less than we use in formula. Limiting sail size too much will either increase the minimum wind speed required or favour lighter riders.

9mtr does seem small as a maximum size for windward/leeward racing
I would also be keen to know what the box rules are going to be before investing thousands of dollars in new gear.
ps. Congratulations Julien
congrats for what ?? Bloody froggie can't even do better than 3rd with all the training he's had !!
(walking around in a dress and a silly hat doesn't qualify as studies !!)
good onya le zoreille !!!!

In NZ they seem to have a 9.0m gentleman's limit, which is what those guys used at the event. They smoked everyone, including in the super marginal conditions and they weren't lightweights....not heavy weights either though.
There are always winners and losers, as soon as it's 15kts us light guys can no longer compete upwind with you heavy blokes anyway so bring on a 9.0m limit it say
Formula has been ruled by big blokes and they'll probably influence the rules so it might end up going back to 12.0m or something stupid. It already looks like going back to 1.0m board width which I think is a bit stupid as that extra 9cm is that much harder to fit in cars/transport and what's the real difference if everyone is on 91.
Yes they proved medium/ light weight sailors do not need larger than 9.0 to be incredibly quick.
A box rule is great but do not make it too restrictive that it becomes a one design.
The board rules they had seemed great to me. 1.0m max width but max 91cm tail. This can cover all new current foil and formula boards plus all existing old formula boards. Without giving anyone an advantage.
I also personally like the 91 boards for handling and storage.
All the major sail brands will be designing for up to 10m so seems logical to align with the PWA to me.
Well done to all competitors good stuff.
I personally think you must cap people like me will not use anything other than my standard 8.4 slalom sail and very old Formula board.
it allready seams to be a money equipment race if you don't have a purpose foil sail your not competitive so you have allready put the nail in the coffin before it's started which would be a shame for what could be a good racing class unfortunately sounds like I won't afford it.

Someone is jealous because he can even win the New Caledonian title where the level in foiling is quite poor
(We even had to send you our previous Australian champion to live there).

For the light weight like me
Seriously, I think it is a compromise too allow lightweight to race when it's windy. Big guys on a foil with 10m will go faster but they will not fly earlier than with 9m (because the rig's weight is really important in foiling) so they will still have an advantage whatever the conditions.
I only had 7.8 slalom sail during this race and I was able to foil as soon if not earlier than the guys on 9m.
Imho a limit of 1 registered sail per person per regatta is more interesting than a size restriction
Big guys can choose to register a 10 or 11 or 12 if they want, but they would have to use it in all conditions
And same for us small guys can choose an 7 ,8 ,9 or whatever but have to use it all the time
I know it might limit the possible range of conditions that can be raced in but I think guys are getting good enough to just about cover 8 to 25 knots with 1 sail
Just seems more likely to even things out to me in a regatta with a range of conditions
Make flying with gear alot better than any restrictions on boards to save a few centimeters and hundred grams
Anyone have a link to the current board rules? I can only find the 2019 pwa guidelines which don't say anything about the 1m with 91 tail width...that I can see.
Some formula boards might have a tail wider than 91? What's to stop a brand making and registering a parallel railed 'formula board'?
TLDR if I make a 1m wide parallel rail board (ie close to 1m tail width) can I race it?
Firstly, what a fantastic regatta on Sydney Harbour! Well done to the organisers and congrats to the place getters.
It's great to see everyone talking about some class rules. There's no need for it to become an arms race and everyone that I spoke to is pretty keen to define a few limitations.
I think a 10m or even 9m max sail size would be a start. Looks like the boards will be 91 or 100 wide and then the Max size Foil Mast and Wings will need to be defined. I'm hoping 110 is too long .

Appart for the PWA there is no official rules. It's just talks at the moment.
The formula board with max width of 91 was chosen by the organisation of the Reggata in Sydney. It was only for this race.
