Working on an idea for a 'Wave Rally' aka wave slalom event for Geraldton next season. Idea is for an event with the main goals of being fun & using multil-fin wave board & wave sails. If wind is light we could use beginner boards as a novelty.

Curious what the interest in such an idea would be with you guys.

Stuff the wave gear. I had a ball last time running the slalom gear through the waves and chasing the swell lines up the coast. Just worried a few by doing 20+minutes runs out to sea, just so fun. Racing in it would be awesome.

I agree, racing on wave kit wouldn't be good, or not as good as fast kit.
Slalom racing at that location would be epic.
In the UK slalom numbers have been low. This year they have a freeride class, basically excluding slalom boards from the kit. I dont know if this will encourage more people to enter or not.

I'm pretty sure there was a surf slalom event at Brighton Beach back in the day. It was good.

All the people that sail Coros use wave gear and don't have any slalom gear. If you make it slalom gear only you'd lose most sailors. Also the idea of the event is fun. It's not supposed to be a PWA event. You'd get way more numbers if you made it for wave gear.

Firmly in the belief that, if at all possible, non-pro events should have a freeride/rec class. Why gatekeep based on people having the latest and greatest? There's a big 10k in my city each year with 50k entrants. A significant part of the field just hopes to walk or run/walk the distance (it's not a flat run by any means).

OK.

That should bring out all the old single fin boards and 5 batten sails from the sheds

Amazing Paul! Yeah def wave gear or maybe just make it open, no gear restrictions and make sure to have the course go through the big breaks so that anyone will be reluctant to jump on slalom gear anyway, unless they like to swim back in ;)

Should be about fun, the less rules the better.

Nah not me. Had wave gear and just got bored so it was onto the slalom gear till it got too much for the 6.6 then swapped to the foil n wing. I'm just not a wave sailor
Maybe start the fast boards at the back and let us chase. Mmmmmm that would be fun

Wave slalom is fun and widens the gear options so don't need dedicated slalom kit to be in the mix. A couple of old wave slalom pics from my archives.
First pics are a wave slalom comp in circa 1983, over 40 years ago - before there was any dedicated slalom gear. (I'm on the cobra sail with homemade board).
Second pic is a wave slalom start at 1986 Rip Curl wave classic, Torquay (I'm Q16, behind Phil McGain and Bruce Wylie on Gaastra sails).
Coincidently, WA-1 is Dave Sheen who is the guy doing the back loop in the Windrider footage that is in the Wave Rally video above.

Love this idea, make it happen. Chuck a few cray ropes in too.

Great thing with Coro's is there is a pre set course with bouys made up of crazy ass cray pots in the middle of breaks :)
Qld's version would be shark nets !

Through the break, out around Mudjimba island and a couple of inshore turns. I can see the Qld version in your backyard Jonesy!!

Today Robby Naish drops a short video of slalom-board jumping.

Would be interesting to also add in a required jump ... though maybe not a trick-jump... could use the Surfr app.

could use one of the turtles as the gybe mark ...perfect in a NE , then around the shark nets on way back in , back out again, dodge the coffee rock on the way back in ...run up the beach , up the stairs and pinch a beer off one of the locals on the deck to claim victory! ... pretty much a normal session :)...although they dont give them beers up ...BYO

Great idea!
It reminds of the speed contest that you once colud join for 5$ at the same spot with everybody on their wave gear (naturally).
When I was there in 1999 I wondered until 5 minutes before the contest how on earth they were going to measure the speed, that's when I saw the coppers car cruising down the dirt road............

Run what you brung is best but to even it all out if you rock up with slalom gear it must be obligatory to complete a wave 360 on the way in...or maybe a taka..

Edit- it is also an excellent idea, crack on bring the fun back, also see if you can get a beer sponsor!
