not generalising...

This arvo my 14 yo son was sailing with my gear in company of his good friend Tiffany (18yo).

Heading towards the now famous "duck island" an 8 m inboard rinker nearly ran over my son, the guy was then so busy insulting the poor kid that he didn't see Tiffany and just smashed her and her gear !!!

She was lucky to only have her scalp open (4 stiches) while she was asking the pilot for help, he told her to "f.. off and get f...ed" and then drove the boat away without even looking back.

Had to send a small boat to rescue the girl as her gear was in pieces.

Unfortunately for the pilot I had my go pro on my boom, caught the whole incident on tape, including the boat's registration.

Someone's in for a very bad time with the cops and then maybe also with Tiff's father...

That's terrible, some people are just a different breed. To not stop and help, having run someone down is really low. Hope Tiffany and your son are ok, and that they catch the bugger and throw the book at him

My son was a bit shocked but is okay now.... he jibed and went to her rescue, but couldn't do much so he yelled to another boat
poor kid was worried all the blood in the water would attract sharks...
Funny how small headwounds bleed so much

Tiffany came to my place tonite after being stiched up, she's alright, her father hasn't calmed down yet !!

While watching the video I had butterflies in my stomach seeing the boat so close to my son at full speed and then running over Tiff...

Guess everyone was real lucky today.

Name and shame! Get this out on YouTube and you will get so many hits that it will make the news! In fact it should make the news, call the network!

Agree. What they need over in New Cal is a six point plan to stop them. If you have that, none of this would happen.

I think the authorities advise against posting the video if they're taking legal action.

I won't feel happy till the guy is rotting in png...

Thanks guys for the advice, video would only be could for cop evidence, the collision is a bit too far back on the screen to be worth putting on you tube.

I'm calling the news now, you're right about name and shame....

Problem with putting it on YouTube now is that when legal action is taken it can be dismissed under the privacy act if it is posted all over the net. Wait until after legal proceedings then show the worl what a a$$hole he is.

Kiteboy D, not meaning to be rude but what's the point of your post ? Like I'm making it up ?

As I mentioned previously, the video will only be good for police evidence, after my son managed to avoid the boat he kept on going, so the collision is approx100 metres further down. (and we know how the go pro is only good up close... )
here's a screen shot
You can see Tiff (orange sail) in the end of the yellow monofilm, just about to get run over.

not much to see, even less to post on you tube....

Hope you get justice for Tiffany and the bugger is charged. Your son was lucky indeed.

A fellow sailboarder here in Gosford, NSW was hit by a 30' cruiser 2 years ago now on the bay. The cruiser skipper ran right over the board and rig but luckily just missed the sailor by centimeters. We called the Water Police who came up to where we were sailing and reported what happened. Pointed out to them where the cruiser was moored. They went to the wharf and found the skipper. Asked him about the incident and then charged him with negligent driving of a motor vessel. The cruiser skipper ended up in court. As well as being charged he was also fined $5,000 for his stupidity. Board and rig were replaced by the skipper's insurance company. Skipper said he did not see the sailboard until it was too late. Sheesh....a close call.

I think KB D was just using a cliche - I doubt that any SB members here would doubt you or condone it. I hope the pilot cops a sentence! That's the equivalent of running down a cyclist, except that drivers are confined to share a narrow strip of road - which isn't the case here.

spot on, have to take Liam (son) to the police station this arvo and they mentioned we should not publish the video cause it would give the offender an opportunity to prepare his case before being brought in and he could also turn himself in to have the "hit&run" re qualified in non assisting a person in danger.

so it's going to be two long hours at the "gendarmerie"....

TV is on it but like said before, if they publish case goes away...

Unbelievable!

Power must always give way to sail.
This boatie has absolutely no excuse for this sort of negligence and inattention.
He has even less excuse for leaving the scene of a serious accident and not rendering assistance.

Glad to hear both were ok after it.

So looking at that frame from the video "Tiff" was not trying to waterstart or anything when he ran her over, she was upright and sailing, in plain sight?
And this was *immediately after nearly running over another windsurfer, who is a kid, and berating them?

Should lose his license.

After all my sailing on the Gold Coast where there are often boats everywhere it is advisable to treat every boat as if they can't see you/are trying to kill you. I always do. While they legally don't have right of way I give it to them.

They have right of way in a channel. I think that's the case at the Goldie. You cross the traffic at your own risk. They are generally paying attention then and they are unlikely to run you down unless you are playing chicken with them or you fall in their path and they can't stop. IMO it's actually more dangerous to get in front of a boat in open water because they are less attentive then.
As you say, best to stay well clear.

Thanks KBD my english being what it is I wasn't sure what it meant

Just got out from the "gendarmerie" after a two hour interview, as a witness for my son, and an evidence provider for me....
Was a stressing experience for the kid but the cops were nice.

Guy is being brought in tomorrow for a random paper check and then gets grilled....
Cop told me the guy could loose his boat AND car licence for that, and that with the "hit & run" it would definitely go to court and the guy was in for a very bad time...

Saw Tiffany this morning, big bump on the forehead, stitches, but mostly fine.

Liam (my son) and Tiff got interviewed and filmed on the beach at midday, with no mention of the go pro and evidence so the guy can't turn up and say "oh I'm so sorry I panicked..."
Will be on the news tonite. So had to call the grandma to tell her her beloved grandson was fine

had the clip "remastered" by Tiff's boyfriend, the bastard yells at my son just after nearly hitting him, you can hear him say " son of a b...." so I assured my son I had never paid Mummy !!

yes Evil panda, Tiff was following Liam, hooked in and planing, she saw Liam just evade the boat (which Liam told me accelerated towards him) and next thing it was on her....

I had answered and couldn't see Hoop's message after that so I deleted too....

It's okay Hoop, I'm not taking action, my son even if nearly run over is only a witness, and though I won't publish the boat's rego or the video, it's good to have exposure so the D.A. will be more incline to severity.... they love their publicity....

And remember I'm located in New Cal/France, not the same laws.

Can't wait to hear the other guy's story though
