The 5.1 should have been a lot more comfortable to sail than the 5.6.

The Patrik 87 might have helped too, though not tried this board.

I would have rigged my 3.3 Tushingham Rock,30 EX and 87 Sonic.

Just can't comprehend how people, windsurf pro or less, can windsurf in 40-50+ knot winds, particularly with anything bigger than a 4.0!!!

If that's the strength of the gusts then what would the average wind speed be?

Excellent video. Love the way the start boat just holds it line and hits the tandem! This event is on the bucket list, can't imagine when or how it will ever happen but its on the list.

Looks like some serious off-shore winds in the south of France - I assume that's where this race is?
Great footage!

Congrats Isaac for finishing 110th out of 1200! I'd be hiding, not windsurfing if faced with 60knots.

interesting could be to see statistics after races: how many sails, masts , boards get damaged

Do we know how many ( if any) were Aussie sailors ?

Then our results ?Next time we should make national contribution to send our few favorites.

Well, it looks like we survived...

Isaac is trully crazy. I did all first three races on 3.7 and 77 wave board. Then 4.5 and exocet rs1 80l. I can confirm 40kt is the base wind, not the gust. But the 70 gusts reports were not during the races, and not on the main beach (which still had some 55-60 gusts on friday morning and sat afternoon). None the less, there were spots on the course where the base wind was probably 45kt during race 1 and 3.

Safety boats are doing an amazing job, and the check in system is proven, so no human lives were lost, but some guys ended up at the hospital. This year wind was trully more than usual. Normally you'd get away with a couple of days in the 30kt region... (or no wind at all like 2008 and 2009). This year that was 40kt for four days.

If you intend to enter next year:

1. Sign in on the first day. Don't take any chance.
2. Bring your wave kit. You're not Isaac. I bought a 3.7 for this event, and I think I could have used a 3.0 or a 3.4 for the sat afternoon.

Yeah, well done Isaac and Captain Hadoc for the effort in getting to Gruissan and taking on the challenge of sometimes nuclear conditions!

Looks like a 'Mortefon Monopoly' with brother and sister being crowned as champions of Defi Wind 2015:

Also worth a read and a laugh - an interview with one of the tandem teams:

Last time we sailed with our French friends Noemi and Tanguy was at Sanctuary Point before they left to go home.
We are hoping to catch up with them one year at the Defi Wind. They went this year and sent us this photo.
Miss you guys!

For the record, I moved back to France about a year ago. So my trip (10h drive) was nothing compared to what Isaac had to go through...
But these Sydney southerly winds sure helped me handle the conditions we were faced with.

Sean that's the best windsurfing vid I've ever seen. It's like going through a wormhole to a planet of endless windsurfing where nobody ever goes to work and nobody ever gets hurt or tired and the wind never stops.

**** I love this sport.

You can see a lot of the Defi Wind videos at the official Defi Wind pages on Vimeo.

This is last years.

There are a few other videos that get made like the Jason Polakow one or this Horue video of their hydrofoil windsurfer.

This is from 2014, but it was quite windy then too, and this gives a good idea of the speed one of the top sailors is travelling at.

A very short clip of Sarah Hebert sailing at the 2015 Defi Wind on an 85 litre board and 5.2m sail.
