Be interested to hear from anyone who has fractured a rib and how long it took to get back windsurfing. Its feeling like a while away at present.....grrrr!!!!
Took me at least a month...
Can you sleep through the night yet without waking up when you roll over?
Try to avoid listening to funny jokes
i cracked one and it didnt stop me. then i busted 4 in 5 places. 7 weeks rest and getting back into it but no jumps or risks and im wearing a vest to protect them.
have you had any muscle spasms? they hurt more than the break!
I broke one rib around the back, the muscle spasms were the worst. Four weeks before I sailed again.
A crazy doc in our team broke three, back sailing in four weeks!!!
I feel your pain. No fun at all..
Its not so much the ribs.. But the intercostles in between the ribs that take the time to heal.
Lots of pain & the longer you can give it the better.
Nothing worse than getting out there & doing it again.
6 weeks
do not rush back, et them heal properly, trust me, you crack them again and you are back to square one!
Yep. 6 weeks. You can pretty much count off the days.
I've done heaps. It's my specialty.
You know when it's broken good and proper when you can't even fart. ooooh sorry,.. I mean pass wind.
(well some people are good at some things and some people are good at other things. )
remember hit a curb riding back from pub ended up with 3 fractured ribs took 4 weeks and anti inflammatory and painkillers.
didnt think i hurt myself that bad was all ok till i woke up ;-) still had cuts on ma elbows and dried blood on face.
Stopping a sneeze is a great relief.
Rather than waiting for it to happen, take lots of deep breaths through the nose.
Repeat as necessary. My sneezes make the roof vibrate.
Torn rib catlidge..... Was about 5 -6 weeks before sailing again, even then I was just hanging on for the ride. Took about 10 weeks before I could sail without feeling it.
What is the most common way to fracture ribs when windsurfing? Catapultes? If that's the case will an inpact vest help? Or was it doing jumps?
How did you guys do your ribs?
Landing on gear is the most common way of breaking ribs. Usually you hit may boom or board on the side. Small cracks tale three weeks to be sailing in 4. Bigger 6-8. Need to be careful in first week after the break if you try to push through pain as you can puncture lung. That is bad. So don't just suck it up for the first week. Be smart.
Took me about 7-8 weeks. Sleeping was incredibly irritating for the first 2 weeks.
My ribs naturally stick out a little bit more than average. My incident involved stepping off the board (not even planning) and not stepping off far enough away from the board. The water was deeper than I expected and naturally went straight into the water. Unfortunately when my ribs got to water level, my board had decided to get caught under slightly so I of course instantly stopped with my rib cage feeling like it had been ripped up and off my spine..
Not fun
Scope, I had a displaced fracture of number 9 and 10 the first week of December. High speed over the front onto my boom, no vest just a rashie.
I had my first sail just over 4 weeks after but absolutely should not have , hurt like hell. It,s now the second week of Feb and I still cannot lie on my right side in bed and it hurts to lie down on a hard surface. Sailing is fine with a seat harness.
I reckon 6 weeks is a good number before you should sail and like everybody says , don't sneeze!!!!! Good luck and hope it heals quickly.
I bruised my ribs badly (not fractured, though)...it was two weeks until I could sail at all, and six weeks until I could sail normally.
What did everyone do while they couldn't sail? Just munted up my foot (not a rib I know) and I am out of the water till September?
Just found it interesting with so many people having hurt themselves and being out for a while. How to keep sane while of the water and incapacitated is the big question?
wait till you get old.
I busted 3 ribs sailing a moth in cyclone Alby(1979?) got caught out on the water and broke em on the boom trying to get ashore,
30 years later I was furling a topgallant sail on the Leuuwin when she dropped off a big swell and the same 3 ribs came back to haunt me. broke on the old joins and hurt more the second time. One of them has popped again since whilst straining on some beams at work.
the doc recons it will just keep happening.
busted mine jumping and landing baaaaad. got flung in the harness into the boom clamp (i think). about 300m out. took about 30 min before it really hurt though.
