Hi fellow windsurfers,

I'm looking into possibly getting a Go Pro camera to take with me when I windsurf and windski on the snow, so it needs to be able to handle the below freezing temps. I have never used one before. I think there are several different models out now. Looks like there are some less expensive models out too. I don't know which one to get. I see them on Amazon for as low as $80-$400. I was thinking about spending around $150 on one, unless I will get a crap one for that price? What are the best mounts to get? I'm thinking maybe a boom mount, or a head strap mount to wear around my forehead. I usually wear a baseball hat on the water, wonder if I can strap the camera around my hat? Looking for advice on all this.

I would not mount it on a helmet nor on your baseball cap. I think either of these would be fraught with risk of foreseeable injury. www.abc.net.au/news/2014-10-14/schumacher-brain-injury-linked-to-gopro-camera/5813874

Just use gopro flat & curved sticky mounts you get in packet of 5 or so, have done this on boom tails, boards & helmets, best to teather gopro also in case crash or knock something but touch wood havnt had a sticky mount come off.

For mast & boom a flymount is the go, more expensive but worth it, they are over engineered, i ran aground at 35+ knots damaged every bit if equipment but flymount did not bother at all. A little heavy is only criticism, mate had one of alternative cheaper mounts come off & it punched a hole in his sail.

As far as straps & stuff make sure it secure enough as not to bounce as footage terrible like that. Dunno bout the latest gopro but battery backpack can also be worthwhile, the more footage the more you can pick best bits from, stop & start new file whenever possible.

& it's all in the edit, with the exception of first vid or two no one wants to watch minutes of just sailing along (you will watch enough of yourself doing that in the edit).

So do the pack of 5 mounts stick well to the deck of the board, because I know the deck is all nonskid based. Where is the best spot on the deck to mount the camera? Seems like behind the rear foot strap would catch most of the board in action. What do you think about that? Can the mount pad wear off and fall off in resulting in loosen the camera?

What do you guys think about the Hero Session model for $199?

Go Pro says that the Session is waterproof up to 33 feet without the waterproof case, which is fine for windsurfing. Would I need to purchase the waterproof housing case just to be safe, or do they all come with a waterproof case?

Is this the boom mount?

Hi magic ride, I have the session, its a great little camera, compact and so much better not having to use a waterproof case with it. Ive had no problems on water, just dont ever open it up until you're home and ready to download. I was though disappointed with the picture quality over what you get with the go pro 4 silver, but I drowned 2 of those camera's just getting it in and out of the waterproof casing and the case not sealing properly.

So upsides for session is no fuss, easy to use and small size, no issues with waterproof case. I currently only use this as haven't yet got a new case for my 4 silver. If this is the first go pro you're getting, I get the session and you'll love it. Later you'll want to upgrade.

$300 here in Aus. But yeah, really good, nice and clear, very small and light. Helmet mounted mine most of the time, didn't even know I had it on.

I just got a gopro session 5 and have used it twice. Great machine, so light, ive used it on my helmet with a side mount. I suggest you do buy the low profile swivel mount (which I have) which keeps it close and forward on the helmet. I've still got my original gopro (the 1st one to come out), but this thing is so light and simple, you just don't notice its there. The biggest thing for me is the lack of fog, which always occurred with the old gopro because of the housing.

I've also just purchased the K4 harness mount although haven't used it yet. Both the gopro and K4 online shops are excellent, the items arriving in 7 days!

All this is good stuff. I'm thinking maybe the Hero Session which is less money than the Hero5 Session. But can I buy a boom mount for the Hero Session? Can someone post a pic up of a boom mount that will fit the Hero Session? Or does the boom mount fit all the go pros?

I have decided to go with the boom mount. But I need to know if Go pro sells it on their site or do I need to purchase it at a windsurfing shop? And does the boom mount work with both Go pro Heros, the Hero5 Session and the Hero Session?

that kind of information can be found on-line and NOT from any windsurf shops i know ..

there are MANY boom mounts
the clewview is a specialized windsurf mount - found here $95
www.chathamwindandtime.com/shop/shopexd.asp?id=135

other mounts like the flymount will mount on boom too
I made a selfie stick out of wood - and lost a camera - no floaty back nor emergency cord - lesson learned
others are just typical GoPro mounts

lotsa luck and you can always start with what you have
editting was my biggest PITA %^&*()

This is my own contraption... 10$ vise from Aldi, cut in half. Has a 360° joint and holds very strong. Tried it on the boom and mast.

You might as well put a satellite weather system on that while you're at it.

I wanna see that thing in action! It needs a wind indicator on it too. How much does that device weigh by the way?

We will have to hear back from waytata to see if he is serious about this contraption of his. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say he does use this contraption for his go pro, and maybe something else that we don't know of yet, but we will have to wait and see.

Well I went with the gopro session model for $110 with free shipping. It was refurbished and described as, Class A refurbished job, with no scratches or blemishes. Looks like new. All I need to buy now is the 64gb sd card class 10 and a boom mount and I'm set. Should be ready to go for under $200.

I'm nothing to do with GoPro but this is what is so good about the new GP5. First up it has 3 settings Super View , Wide & Linear. The Linear will give you the none Gopro look . It has in built stabilization with superior low light and because it's not in a case you get no wind ripping sound from the 3 mics , the sound is amazing , if it's mounted on the boom it will hear you talk to it . Forget the wifi it has voice commands , Go Pro Start recording , Go pro Stop , Go pro take photo. How good is that., and no fogging in hot or cold climates. It also has a telemetry App for to add GPS data which comes up on your videos

Don't worry about the 4k sucking up card space just set it at Pal 1080 x 50fps and you will get dream vision and will slow down silky smooth in post. You spend so much on your gear it's ridiculous to skimp on the camera gear to film you ripping.

Here is a site where you can get 44 GoPro mounts for 32 bucks
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Accessories-Set-Kit-Head-Pole-Floating-Mounts-F-Gopro-Hero-4-3-3-2-Camera-AU/331805957413?

This is a video to add the GPS data
