Am off to Maui for a week or so in October and currently pricing flights $2K, which seems pretty pricey cheapest is Air Pacific $1.6K through Fiji but connections are crap. Haven't flown there from Oz before so was hoping to get an idea of whether this is normal price or wait it out in hope of some discount fares being released.

I've seen around $1700 return on Hawaiian (syd-oahu-maui), Jetstar can get you to Oahu for ~$1100 return, not sure what Oahu - Maui return is but surely wouldn't be more than $400. I'm pretty sure I've seen Jetstar flights for $500 return before but I reckon in the current climate that's not going to happen. End of the day i'd budget ~2K for flights...seems like the current 'market rate'

someone at work got flights for about $600 and she books everything herself. I'm assuming one-way but I'll find out more. she has been to hawaii at least 10 times & she doesn't surf or windsurf!

We have always paid about the $1400 mark return to Oahu and about $120 for Maui connection. Just be careful of the cost of taking gear on the flights, different airlines have different policy and charges.

Can some times work out better just taking rig and hiring board. We used to take a boom bag with 2 rigs and a mask bag with 2 masts without paying any excess. Hiring a board also works well as you can chop and change as often as you like at no cost to suit the conditions. Have fun...

depending on the season (school holidays) peak will see return flights bris - syd - honolulu for about the 1700-2000 pp mark. Go outside of these dates and you can get flights for 1300-1700 return. Honolulu to kahalui (maui) with hawaiian airlines is about 160 USD return.

All airlines apart from air pacific go through sydney - qantas, hawaiian and bogstar.

Hawaiian will do connections with virgin - but you would have to book through a travel agent i would think. don't know what the service is like - will find out in 3 weeks

Qantas has a really bad wait on the return flight - you will sit in sydney for 3-4 hours for the 9pm flight back to brissie. Cool part is you can bring gear back free of charge and there is a baggage transfer and free shuttle in sydney - everyone else you have to carry luggae from intl to domestic. oh yeah old planes, old cabin crew, old service

bogstar is bogstar- cheap ticket, then once you pay for everything else costs more than full fare - piece of shiiite airline. Do have convenient connections though.

Air pacific have a few hour stop over in fiji going over - but there is a cool massage place that costs 1 fiji dollar per minute. If you return with them you will have to spend a night in fiji. There is also a stop and feel in apia (samoa) that they don't really advertise. Basically land, get off plane get frisked by security and then get back on plane and leave.....yes even children. Really nice service - nothing flash....bula

Air australia......... direct form brissy to honolulu, why could't you idiots get it right

tim, sorry about the delay. girl at work got $750 return to honolulu!! admittedly it was a 'super' special and with cr@pstar. that means NO food and that is a 10 hour flight. of course you can take or buy food. prob $1500 now?

I don't think their baggage allowance is anything great but you can always pay in advance by the kg. I did this for a WA flight with Qantas a couple of years ago - boom/mast/2 sails. for a week prob in Maui not worth taking a board as you can usually have unlimited swap(s) at the rental places. there have been earlier posts about taking gear V hire.

I was hoping for a maui trip before my third child is 2 (she is 7 months) but just flights will be $5000-$6000.

if you can handle jetstar hang out for the specials, is October classified as shoulder season?

oh yeah - if you end up hawaiian for flights then angle for a discount for the maui flight. around the $100-$120 return I believe. not sure about the other airlines.

Jetstar had a sale that finished 2 weeks ago. We managed to get 3 tickets plus toddler and 140 kg luggage allowance for $2,700. I think it was $700 per ticket plus add ons.

Inter island flights are relatively cheap if you are a bit flexible and book a fair bit in advance.

Adelaide - sydney- Oahu return, $1700 on average over the last couple of years, can be cheaper in shoulder season. We have only gone in June / July for best winds. Inter island flights from $69 - $150 each way. Always flown with quants / jetstar, never had any real issues, good connections, not bad with luggage allowance ( travelling with two adults and a kid spreads your luggage allowance out nicely)
Nearly booked air Australia this year, would have lost $4500

Not sure about Perth -> Honolulu but I did LA -> HNL -> Samoa -> Tonga -> Auckland -> Sydney many years ago.

The trip LA to HNL was a nightmare. The checkin staff in LA were complete bitches. Sorry just can't say it any other way. Followed by rude gate staff. Then were told bags didn't make it onto flight. To top it all off I had a cockroach in my inflight meal.

The HNL -> Auckland stretch became an HNL -> Samoa -> Tonga -> Auckland flight because they first had to pick up some passengers from a cancelled flight. They then had to land in Tonga because they didn't have enough fuel.

The whole experience was a complete joke. Don't know. Maybe I was unlucky but these days I'd rather do a direct flight and pay a few dollars more.
