So, the 2017 Mauritius Attitude Challenge kicks of in a month beginning in the 1st week of September.

Im likely to stay at Pointe d'Esny from around 30th of this month to the 12th of September. I'm pretty sure I'll take my 9yr old son with me.

Beachfront accomodation is really cheap if a 4+ bed villa or bungalow is shared...less than Euro50/night.

Flat water sailing is incredible there and my goal is to complete the 80km marathon. There are other slalom races between the 2nd and the 9th...personally I don't like turning corners much ;p

have a look at some of these places to stay and let me know if you've already made the decision to go, or thinking about it and might like to share a villa

Hey, planning to go from Sydney via Perth. Did you get any discount with air Mauritius?

Cheers!

Yes there is discount fares on flights. They are usually $1450+(From Perth) and are $1250 once you pay your entry fee. Your saving from Sydney may be even more.

you also get huge discount on excess baggage. $75/extra 23kg board bag.
pack everything except carry on luggage in your board bags if you can..and keep it under 300cm. Your first piece of luggage is included in your fare. I took 3 board bags, a 15kg duffel bag and a guitar plus my carry on and it cost me $200 extra...but I did a fair bit of flirting to get that ;p

I bubble wrapped every last piece of equipment but only protected noses and tails of my two boards and had zero damage. All my bags are 10mm Flying Objects bags and the big one has wheels so I could stack them and wheel the lot.
..I bubble wrapped everything in front of the Check-in 20min before the last call in my typical fashion. Pretty hectic because I'd already had my car break down on the way plus forgotten essential meds I had to get someone to run out to me lol

Next question? :)

Wow that was quick. Thanks for all the info.
First I'll pay the entry fee and then see if I can get a deal on flights.

I'm planning on taking 7.1 7.8 8.6 and a 70 wide board and 80 wide. Do you think it's a good idea? I've never been there and I don't know what the wind can be.

Cheers again, looking forward to meet you there!

Max thats exactly the gear required for the event. I have been there 3 years in a row.

It can blow 25 knots but its mauritius and its flat water it is enough to handle on a 7.8 and a 70 wide board if you need to.

I basically took the same kit as you mentioned last year. I had a 7.0, 7.7 and 9.0. 70 and 85 wide board.

Air Mauritius flights as mentioned above are 1250 but you may find a cheaper flight direct on the website.

The flight is only discounted from Perth.
You would have to fly Virgin or Qantas to Perth and the gear isnt too expensive to take on these.

You will struggle to take all that gear in 3x 23kg if you want to take 3 sails, 3 masts, 2 booms, 2 boards, 6 fins etc. But you can make it work or maybe pay excess on one bag.

FROM CHRIS TYACK the Event Organiser email: christodesign@intnet.mu

This year the Mauritius Challenge is having 2 event in one.

There will be the IFCA Grand Prix, which is a windsurf only competition. The level will be interesting with a few europeans coming.

The dates are from the 2 to the 6 and the prize giving will be at Zilwa. Prize money will be 5000? and African & Asian IFCA tittle.

The other event which actually is the main focus, is the DEFI MAURITIUS. We just sign a long term contract with Philippe Bru from DEFI WIND to make this event grow in the years to come combining Windsurf & Kitesurf.

The main race will be the crossing between Pte Desny to Ile aux Cerfs. For those who haven't done it yet, it is really a beautiful race as on one reach of 10km you come across two different flat water lagoons seperated by a canal where it's chops can make it very technical. You actually can see it on the poster attached.

On top of this crossing, the best day of the week will be chosen to do the Arnaud de Rosnay M?morial Cup. This race will be a 80km marathon (twice the crossing) and probably the longest windsurf race ever.

As from the 7th, everybody will move to Pte Desny. From there we will be doing different long distance courses to make the most of the best freeride spot of the island.

Accommodation :

You can either stay at Zilwa hotel or get a bungalow (sharing of 3 to 4 rooms at around 150? per day)

If some of you guys are interested, I can help out to find the best deals around which will make your trip not only fun but also cheap.

There is already SA team, Seychelles, French team. I'm waiting for an Asian team to comfirm, and hopefully the Kanguruz won't chicken out ;)

Please do not hesitate to ask questions.

Cheers

Christo

I took a bunch of kit last year and only used the biggest kit I took along - 7.7 and an 80cm board. As Izymiester mentioned, the wind doesn't pack quite the same punch it does in other parts of the world. I generally shift to 7.0 and the 70cm board when the average hits 15 knots in Cape Town. Over there, I was still on the big kit. I hear it can blow though.

It was great fun last year and recommended for all. Sadly this year's windsurfing budget got eaten by a new house so I'll have to give this one a skip.

I've just received this from a contact at Pointe d'Esny

its the perfect location right next to the Nautical Club where we race out of 6000 Mauritian rupees per night divided by the amount of guest. You won't find better than this.

there are only 4 days racing at Zilwa in the North and it's cost effective to base at Pointe d'Esny which is a much nicer location and drive/be driven up to Zilwa where we can leave all our equipment for those 4 days.

If I can't share with a group I probably not go up to Zilwa and just train and adventure around South.

this place ideally needs 6 adults including me and there is room for 8.

DM me if interested or you can find me at mobsurfwa@gmail.com

or on. 0415271184

Just a heads up on airfares.

We've just been offered an amazing deal where if 5 tickets are booked, we get them for the price of 4!

so the flights were already discounted from $1460 > $1250....now if we get 5 competitors book it will cost us only $960 each!

So who else is coming????
