Ok sorry its technically not sailboarding but I don't post in the general section and had to share!
Homeward Bound
50 x 60cms Oil
The judge was Margaret Sivyer - former director of Maitland Art Gallery.
The first prize winner Sue Linton impressed the judge with her excellent work.
" The portrait of Brian English 'Homeward Bound" is a wonderful study, capturing his love of the sea, and showing his journey through life in his face. The character of the man was so well and sincerely portrayed."
Here is what Brian said when I let him know-
'I think that the judge "read" the painting very well. Picking the pleasure of being at sea, plus the well lived-in face. She doesn't know me, as far as I am aware, so she has seen what you put there, not a likeness/photographic image of someone she is familiar with.
It has been a very interesting project to have seen develop. Also a bit amazing that so many people have seen it and appreciated it.'
Sboardcrazy- "As I specialise in portraits it's great to have a judge confirm that my portraits capture the personality / soul of the subject. I've been working away perfecting my art for years with that aim foremost in my mind.
People tell me I capture soul , something intangible thing in my portraits and it's great to have this skill officially recognised in this way!"

Nice! It's a good portrait with tons of character and mood.
Thanks!
I don't often get to do a painting just for me as I am usually painting portraits for clients. They provide the photo and I bring it to life. With these portraits I make the portrait more flattering than the photo.
With Brian's portrait it was just for me so I warned him I would be exaggerating his weatherbeaten look and it wouldn't necessarily be flattering! He still likes it though..
Love it. That's brilliant. Congratulations on the prize too - well deserved.
Thanks! Thanks for your support everyone!

Well done, and congratulations!
It is such a good painting it almost feels like I know him...
Cooool!
I like the way you painted the rest of the picture differently - so his head stood out from the background for its detail and character. Well deserved.
That is awesome. Love art that looks like what it i supposed to be, it is so much more clever than some abstract stuff.
That kind of painting is unbelievable to somebody who can only do stick figures (me)
Wow.
excellent art work reminds me of me when the wind get up.seriously that portrait is a work of art catches the expression of a old tine sailor doing what he loves.
fantastic work sue.
some very talented women in windsurfing.

Wow.
A lot of judges prefer expressionistic artwork , not more realistic work. I believe a portrait should be more than arty or a good likeness and capture something of the subject so it's nice to find a judge that agrees!
Thanks everyone.. My partner can do really expressive stick figures..

+ 1!
Well done Sue,
I have to echo Marks comments.
I'm in awe of people, like you, with the talent to bring pictures to life.

Thanks Windanza.. I'm glad you are still appreciating the portrait. It looks better in the flesh smaller portraits don't photograph well as the camera exaggerates texture etc..
If you want to see how it looks in the flesh get back 10' and view the photo of the painting in the post from there.
If anyone is near Cessnock and wants to see some of my paintings in the flesh I have paintings in an exhibition at the Hunter Valley visitor Centre - opening tomorrow night. It will go for 3 weeks.
I'm going for a sail beforehand so I hope the wind picks up early enough to allow me the time!
Congratulations Sue. Its good to see you making a go of it. Now you can raise your fees :)
Everyone's an artist but very few are good and even fewer are successful.
