Advice please on one board to take for a week trip to New Cal in November. Or can anyone advise what a multi day hire will cost
Option 1. 94 litre Starboard Kode FSW (+22 knts)
Option 2. 114 litre JP magic ride (18-25 knts)
Option 3. 135 JP Hydrofoil. (Sub 20 knts)
I have been previously advised to take a 115(ish) for my 80kg weight range. I used the rental gear in April and whilst it was great for the day, if it was any longer I would have been wishing that I had my own boards and sails. The board was a 2-3 year old JP Super Sport and a similar aged NP Ryde. Guess that it depends on your weight and what sort of sailing you want to do.
Anse Vata was amazing for free sailing / jumpy bumpy and if you're brave enough, some ocean sailing in the shipping channel . I was also told that November is the best month for wind too (Sean, correct me if I'm wrong).
Good luck and if you enjoy it half as much as I did, you're guaranteed to have some great memories!
Taking your own gear for a week trip is well worth it, depends on your size which board might be best bet, maybe the magic ride, the kode might be a bit small some days.
I went for 2 weeks in November a couple of years ago with the speedsters and after consultation with Sean took 99l Falcon & 6.2/7.0m (65kg rider), worked out well, overpowered on the 6.2 a couple of days, used both sails about the same number of days each over the two weeks. The guys took 110-120 and 7.0/7.8 I think but hopefully they see this and confirm.
Have fun!
Thankyou gentlemen. The magic ride is the most versatile. I forgot to include the logistics question. Is it then possible to stay somewhere that will happily transfer my gear from the airport and back,or are there maxicabs, garage my board and I can walk to the beach and rig? Thus avoiding car hire. I was looking at LeMeridian.
It is possible to walk your gear to the beach launch area from there, a bit of a trek though, some sort of trolley or wheels would be a good idea. You can organise a maxi taxi to pick u up from the airport to get to the hotel. I rented a car which was easy to keep my gear in at night and get it to the beach every day, plus do some touring around, cost a bit but worth it.
114 JP with a good pointer, 6.5 and 7.5 sail cam or freeride even crossover what ever it all works.
Fly Air Cal as they have a better sporting euipment for flying. Make sure you take Vegemite for Sean and he will point you in the right direction.
Most important make your first rum from Anse Vata through that shipping channel to ilot Maitre it's just sensational .
Ask the locals about the rock once its covered its high tide safe to sail the other side with no damage to fin.
You will notice foiling is the go but everyone still does the normal windsurfing as well.
Paradise thats for sure ouh la la
One of those windsurfing places you'll never forget
Heading into the shipping channel = exciting
Cruising in anse vata bay = heaven
Never been there so insanely jealous - but its a long way blah blah so why not two boards (or take one rent one) ?
I figure the flat water is so good but the wave sailing insane so you'd hate to miss either if it is too windy or too light.....
not to mention the bar on duck island mimi and sean sent us too one day
and watch out for these little guys, they can hop onto your board for a free ride to the island
