This is the kind of kite-idiot we have to deal with, great to know he was just taking the piss Intersting sense of humour

Worst still anyone of us would have helped him with his trailier moving it into an adjacent bay, but hey then the advertising would not have been so obvious.
What a w****r

I am just guessing, but sometimes British people say 'taking the piss' instead of 'pushing my luck'. I have no idea of whether this guy is English or not, but it does seem to be common usage - I don't think he was saying that he thought it was funny.

Someone did this exact same thing down the coast here a few weeks ago and when I turned up I had nowhere else to park other than right in front of his car's nose, and my mate had already parked up right at the back of his trailer.

I think this guy had turned up before all the sailors had turned up so he figured he would ignore all the boat parking bays and park near this lovely empty patch of grass. When I turned up there were another 20 cars there and nowhere else to park.

Of course, as Murphy would have it, this guy returned after everyone else except us has had our bit of 25 knot fun, so it looked a bit strange having only our cars as the other two cars in the car park, having parked him in... I'm not sure he believed my mate when he told him that only an hour ago the car park was full.

Whats the problem? Just park him in and go out for a sail till twilight. Leave a note under the car's wiper if there is a problem, you will move out around 8pm.

Looks like its a white Delica parked behind the trailer. I could have parked my white Delica infront of the car. Would have been a classic.

That's really...... really bad form

It's the lack of respect for other peoples needs that's really hard to stomach, and it sounds like at least one person missed out on a windsurf because of it ..... sometimes public shaming is the only way to get behaviour change,.........

Don't worry he was parked in

I think he didn't realise just how busy it gets there after work.

The naming and shaming has been done, and one strike allocated.

Now the kiters can troll along about the story

This reminds me of the commonly expressed opinion on the kite forum:

"As long as you are having fun, that is all that matters."

I have quoted it a bit out of context here, usually it is in respect to people arguing which is better, style x or style y; but on the whole it seems to me to be a pretty selfish attitude.

Too right that is out of context- it is used to highlight the fact that people need to chill out and just enjoy what they are doing instead of worrying about everyone else...... I have seen a windsurfing school do a similar thing and countless others - stupid thing to do but no reason to tarnish all kiters as selfish pricks

Only those who lay out their strings along the beach and expect everyone else to hop over them and the ones who take up about 40 meters of space on the water.

Did you guys actually see that the guy with the trailer does windsurfing lessons as well ????????????

So...all this abuse aimed at kiters is totally unnecessary.

I have respect for windsurfers that I know and alot of them are good blokes but like with anything there are a few bad apples....

1. They're lines not strings
and 2. Where the f**K have you seen 40 meters of lines taking up a beach, beens though 90% of kite lines in the industry range from 20-25 meters in length?

Once again a know it all poley expressing his shear ignorance of the great sport.

Pretty sure that's what you meant - although I have no clue what 'beens though' could mean, and I'm sure there was a more creative word you could have used instead of f**k?

20-25 meters x four lines (or is that five in most cases these days?) would seem to be at least 80 meters, probably closer to 100 in most cases. 40 meters was being generous I think.

40m of space on the water is easy.. a 20 meter line length either side of the rider (either side of the wind window).

SOME kiters are unpredictable, and SOME windsurfers are frightened of the flying cheese slicer which can change direction very rapidly.

By the way, while we're correcting ignorance - it's a mast, not a pole.

lol, this thread is getting epic.

The reason kiters get so defensive when you talk to them about being a public nuisance/danger is because deep down they know that their sport is going to be banned in 90% of spots, especially as its popularity grows.

Sure there are a large majority of sensible kiters (my father in law is one of them), but as more and more kooks, try-hards and tossers swell the kiting ranks, the inevitable is bound to happen. While windsurfing also has its fair share of kooks, etc, at least with a windsurfer, the carnage you can create is largely limited to a 430cm radius around yourself.

If kiters were smart, they wouldn't talk up their sport so much. The less people that kite, the less chance of it getting outright banned.

Kiters try to argue that windsurfing is a dying sport... I'd suggest that it is kiting which is unsustainable. Which is sad, because anything which gets the masses off the couch, away from the TV and into the fresh air is usually a Good Thing.

Just hope that windsurfing doesn't get dragged down with it.

Which is exactly the problem. Without regulation, it is doomed to be made as illegal as base jumping.

edit: don't get me wrong, I have nothing against kiters, in fact I am related to a kiter. I surf the same breaks as kiters with no problems. I just think that it is a sport which suffers a lot from di*kheads. If I was a kiter, I'd be angry and defensive also.

Actually for you information

Base jumping is not illegal yet again a windsurfing chatting a load of **, In Australia it is legal to BASEjump in Queensland National Parks, but not in NSW National Parks (without a permit). Other objects can be jumped if you obtain permission. There have been sanctioned BASEjumps made from the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Rialto Building in Melbourne and high cranes at various major events like the Australian Motorcycle Grand Priz.

And as for your comments on kitesurfing your just jelous that 1. you cant do it or 2. your to much of a pus*y to try

I am amazed at how many gays on trays actually frequent the windsurfing forums. I thought they had their own forum section. More proof that deep down they all really want to be part of the windsurfing crew. But as we all know because windsurfing actually requires some skill they will never be able to make the transition.

And you know this how?

Maybe your time would be better spent trying to figure out a way to regulate kitesurfing, so you don't get banned from your local beach.

This may well be the case in QLD......at say (Knob Head ) and all the best to you.
Enjoy

But here in W.A windurfing is alive and well....... UNFORTUNATLY it is fast becoming comprimised by incidents accidents and the unwillingness of kiters to realise no matter how good you are, when things go pear shaped ........there is great potential for a second and third party to be involved.?

Also windsurfing has eatablished itself in all the good locations Surf/ speed spots around Australia for the past 30 plus years ,and has comprimised /fitted in and ajusted to all other beach activities going on around it. AND BEEN ACCEPTED.

The last thing ANYONE WANTS IS A BAN on anyone for anything

RULES ARE FOR FOOLS AND THE WISE INTERPERATE.

Kiters / instructors /shop owners better start reajusting the attitude before there are rules regulations and unpresidented hostility.

to have windsurfing even comprimised by kiting is a joke........... but fast becoming a reality as you bleed your case.

Its all free and fun so lets keep it this way.

Are you allowed to jump off a CBD building onto a crowded street? No.
Are you allowed to kite on a crowded beach, across from a busy street? Yes.

If you get over your emotions, you might see that there is actually a problem here.

Stop attacking me, and attack the issue.

Man, this is epic! I really respect this kite kid for standing up to the old dinosaurs like us. I want to be him.... man, he's so hardcore! Look at the way he kites! Look at the way he swears! He's the New World Order, we're the Dodos....

I'm going to go a buy a kite, right now!

....but only a little one. Afterall I'm too scared to fly a big one -think of the consequences! I saw some great kites in the toy shop down the road, maybe they'll have something for me...??? Maybe with some pretty colours! And a tail with bows on - I'd like it to have a tail! It'd be so pretty, swooping and flying on the breeze!

I'm going to be a kiter when I grow up, just like Casey!

KitingCasey, besides literacy and numeracy issues, you seem also to have comprehension difficulties too. All these difficulties may be affecting your higher order thinking abilities. Please consider enrolling in an Adult Community Education (ACE) course for your own good.

I never said the strings are 40 meters long. All I know is that a kitesurfer does take up a hell of a lot more room on the water than a windsurfer. I also know kiters lay their strings out on the beach and expect everyone else to hop over them. My guessimate is they probably take up around 40 meters or so of space out on the water, how the kite goes up and down without any real apparent control by the kiter.

Windsurfing is a dying sport? Well it has another 50 years before its dead as my 14 year old nephew is into it and loves it. There are plenty of other kids doing it too. If either sport is in danger of dying it is unfortunately kiting for a number of reasons.

Firstly it takes up too much room which is an growing factor on our overcrowded planet.

Secondly its dangerous and its only a matter of time before an injured kiter, bystander or their family litigates someone in the industry due to the inherent dangers of the sport. Councils will start banning kiting the way they ban other dangerous activities.

Thirdly kiting is a fad sport, just like windsurfing was in the 80s. Like any fad it attracts more than its fair share of d!ckheads and posers. Windsurfing survived the inevitable crash once the sport became unfashionable. Its debatable whether kiting will survive its crash once the next new craze comes along.

If you love your kiting then good on you. We really don't mind you getting out there and having fun. However you seem to not enjoy it that much as you keep running windsurfing down. Why is that?

You don't like kiting lines referred to as strings? Whats the difference? You keep calling masts poles. There are many differences between masts and poles. Probably the main difference is you usually find a pole used on firm ground while mast is used on a vessel or vehicle to support a sail.

If you keep trolling here you posts will keep getting deleted. We have all read your opinions and still nothing has changed; most people here probably think you'd be better off washing the dishes than writing your opinions here.

Calling me a f***head is clearly violating forum rules so you better watch it.

....actually, no, sorry, I'd forgotten... I'm not going to buy a kite...

...because I'm off to Greece for the winter to sail with some of the best freestylers in the world in a place where kiting has been and gone and is now regarded as a passing fad for fat city boys having a mid-life crisis.

Windsurfing is alive and well in the rest of the world. Kiting is a fad - it's just that Australia is behind the times. Casey, gimmie a call when you've outgrown your fad and you're bored of being a teabag and want to try something that requires some real skill...

People with windsurfing trailers are just as bad. Honestly at a busy spot, if you got a windsurfing trailer, use some courtesy, park your trailer close to launch spot and then park your car further away so there are some parks left for other people.

Bloody annoying when you see inconsiderate bastards taking up 2 spots at a packed location. Sure its not an issue if people are say carpooling, and like 3-4 guys rock up together with a car and trailer.. but when its just one person

When I was a boy...

When I started windsurfing in the 80's we were then new kids on the block - young brash, cool - it was so obvious that all the other water sports did not know what they were missing. I would often have arguements with my surfing mates that surfing will be overtaken by this new cool sport. If only they could see the light..

Fast forward 20 years and things haven't changed - the kitesurfers have invented cool - we are all old dinosaurs. There now telling us to see the light - And like windsurfing in the 80's it will eventually self-implode and leave the a few of the faithful to keep doing what they love - having fun on the water..

KitingCasey - I don't give a rats about kitesurfing - it look like a great sport for those how enjoy it - i enjoy windsurfing and always will.I've talked to my local kiteboarders on what I can do to help them and occassionally have helped launch and retrieve kites. I've got no anomosity towards them and so far theres been none towards me but when kitesurfing starts interfering with my ability to windsurf then I'll be peeved. You enjoy your sport and I enjoy mine. If you want to call us names go ahead, in the time i've been windsurfing I've seen your type come and go (love kitesurfing until the next cool extreme sport comes along). Unfortuately - it that small minority in kitesurfing AND windsurfing who stuffs it up for everyone...

And being old beard stroking dinosaurs were hopefully mature enough to have enough wisdom and communication to sort out our windsurfing problems...

Maybe you should try that - communication with other kiteboarders rather than childish slanging and bitching towards other water users
