For something different, I am experimenting with fast sailing my SUP`s
I have a 10.6 BIC Jungle with masttrack (Acetech windsup) and a Fanatic 9.2 allwave with a mast mount.
I am 75kg, and have actually had the Jungle up on the plane with a 7.2 sail with the standard thruster setup.
It sailed much better than i had anticipated.
I am turning my attention now to the allwave.
I am wondering if it is best to stick with the standard fin setup, or perhaps take the centre fin off and put in a larger slalom fin for some lift.
Has anyone had experience planing / fast sailing on their SUP`s ? Fin setup advice?
I have gone 27+ knots (which I think is fast for a sup?) on a friend's WindSUP and wow...best ride of my life ever. I used a freeride fin on it and thought it worked well. Maybe this weekend I'll see if I can use it again and try a slalom fin on it.
Begs the question, why?
I know Bender has been 28 knots or so on a SUP, but no straps, a heavy board and lightweight base fitting are not condusive to high speeds.
Also, most SUP's have US box fins. Finding "slalom" or bigger free ride fins will be tricky and stress the fin box out no end.
Why? - yeah,,,that`s a fair question.
I have dedicated windsurfing boards as well so .... probably just intrigued more than anything to know what these boards can do.
I guess it`s also pretty handy to go to the water for a paddle and a sail with just one board.
so is this ridiculous? or could it actually work ok? 32cm.
I think you'll struggle to get the allwave to plain, It's ok for light-wind wave rides but that's about it as far as windsurfing is concerned. I know because I've tried, I can get plaining on my normal board before the allwave even looks like plaining.
The fin choice is very important.. IMO.. Especially if you want to go upwind.. but even across the wind most stock SUP fins will spinout once plaining and have load put on them.
Check out the fin that I used in this vid (at the 10 sec mark).. It's the Naish fin off a 14' Glide.. and the board is the 10'10" Nalu.. Sail is a 5.7.. and it was about 10-15 knots.
I've had many people tell me these boards don't plain..
My first SUP was 9' 10" and 30" wide and I got a mast track put in it. I regularly got it to plane. I found it hard to surf however and little narrow for my first board in the surf. I purchased a 9'6" all wave which is 32" wide and have loved riding in the surf as a SUP but haven't really got it plane with a sail. It is better for wave riding however even though the all wave is lighter it just doesn't seem to want to get up. So I believe you really need a decent length SUP to get planing. In both cases I changed the centre thruster to a standard wave fin (I think 26cm out of my wave board).
Jungleman, interested in seeing how you go with the all wave. I've got one, when I tried it with the stock fins it wasn't too flash in flatwater. Felt draggy, required lots of power to move it. Fins didn't have no where near enough lift. I haven't pursued it further. Still use it on small waves and very light wind which works quite well.
A slow plane no problem but as you go faster and move towards the back of the board the tail rocker will cause the nose to rear up in the air like in the video, this is pretty ungainly and unmanageable IMO.
I think that fin will be ok in that finbox, it's not that huge and they made the fin that big for that box, at a certain point they don't get any longer for a US box for obvious reasons.
Can't wait to hear how it goes
Those side bite fins probably have angle inward, you should sail it for a bit then take them out, I'd be curious.
Had my Fanatic 10' x 30" Fly planing in 15 knots with a 5.9 wave sail using the standard fin set up. Went reasonably well and was a lot of fun on the bay at Jimmy's Beach NSW.
Used the same sail with my 8' 10" x 31 Allwave on another day at Umina Beach NSW and it was pretty ordinary going, but did manage to surf the small waves well. Almost impossible to get the Allwave planing at all as when you moved back it slowed down even more. Guess it is the difference in rocker lines. Now don't sail the Allwave and use the Fly to teach my daughter to sail.
You can see the stock fin letting go on me in this vid once I put load on it..
This is the 10'6'' Nalu.. Having the side fins in might have helped.
The Fly has an 8" centre fin and 2 x 5" side fins & a much flatter rocker line as well. A bigger centre fin in this would probably work OK say a 10" or 11" wave fin.
The Allwave as you know has 3 x 5" fins. Maybe a bigger centre fin in the Allwave would work (maybe) but I really think it is not worth the effort trying to get a wave rockered SUP to plane. The video Fanatic used to show the Allwave being sailed in waves and apparently planing is an extraordinary event.
BTW I am 70kgs.
Good luck anyway.
Awesome videos guys - still a chance for me and my mistral pacifico. Upwind is tough though what is the answer thinking about putting a centre board in.
Cheers

I think you will find that a wave sup like the all wave will really struggle to get planning. Im sure a knowledgeable shaper could explain why. I believe its somiting to do with the rocker of the board, I think a windsurfer always has a section of flat rocker to allow iit to get going whereas a surf sup requires the accelration off a wave to get moving. I might be wrong but after sailing a 8'6" all wave on the weekend I found it almost impossible to plane without a wave. Many of the stronger gusts would have seen me planning on my 91L waveboard. The all wave was still great fun to sup sail though.
