Found a 6.6m sail at Terrigal beach. Hoping to reunite it with its owner.
Seems to have 2 broken battens and perforated batten pockets. So now I'm guessing it may have been dumped.
Would it be worth anything?
Should I put it in lost and found?
Could you post a pic of it ?. Sounds like it would make a good freebie sail to a beginner with some repair work done to it (they could use thin wooden dowels as battens). If you can post a pic, I could see if it's worth repairing.
I've had several Loft sails that battens compressed over time and usage, the big tube sliding over the smaller diameter main body. Also, plenty of battens protruding thru the front of the batten retainer at the luff, from too sharp a batten due to not having a plastic tip. It seems prevelent in some older Loft sails.
The two new ones I have have not had any problems like that.
Windsurfer's do tend to throw away a lot of decent gear.
The best stuff I"ve gotten from the throwaway bin is a 2009 SuperFreak 4.5, in perfect condition. I left a note in "Lost and Found" of a local windsurf forum, but no reply now for 3 years.
One of my friends bought all new gear, and threw away a 2012 Loft 7.4. He just left a pile of good used windsurfing gear at the rigging site, and showed up a week later with all '16 gear.
A lot of windsurfer's give up, for kiting, biking, or whatnot, and just throw their old gear away.
I think that model was 2007... or 10 years old... In windsurfing terms, that is 3 epochs and 2 mass extinction events.
There's a plastic tab inside the mast foot with the serial number... it probably starts with "L07"... indicating brand and year...
I agree, the smaller SuperFreak's are very good sails with wide wind range and moderate hard pulling power. I also had the 4.2, which I gave to a friend who needed a small sail for max winds in the Berkeley area.
I have a bunch of monfilm twisty 4.2-4.7 sized sails, and the SuperFreak is one of the best in terms of wind range, soft power, decent speed in high wind bumpy conditions, is light weight, FEELS light, easy to rig, and plain durable.
Im a beginner. I need a good sail... mine are all from the last century. But I recently spent all my $$$ on a new (newer..) board and gears, so I wouldn't be able to give you anything. I would grab it off your hands if you can't get rid of it. I got a few spare battens, I'm sure I can fix it.
Nigel,
There may be a reason other than littering your finding half boards on the beach. Do they tend to be the pointy end of the boards?
