I've seen heaps of threads and questions asked about where to rent gear in Maui so I thought I'd post my experience.
Myself and a mate just spent 2 weeks there, I rented from Second Wind and he from another provider.
Second Wind were bloody awesome, they responded to all of my emails (no matter how stupid) leading up to my visit and gave me one of the cheapest quotes and provided insurance.
Upon arrival Kevin handed over a brand new Fanatic FSW, 2 brand new Ezzy sails and components.
Throughout the rest of my trip Kevin, Mike & Ian were great. They'd swap out sails, sometimes twice daily, gave me fixed as opposed to adjustable lines and spend ages looking at beachcams & wind readings providing us great advice. They even chucked me a third sail at no cost when the wind was variable.
They credited me for days I didn't sail, keeping my preferred kit to one side so no one else could rent it. On a couple of occasions I took a SUP instead and they credited the difference in hire costs back to me.
I've been to Maui a few times renting from a few different places and Second Wind was by far the best experience with the best gear.
All boards are Fanatic (full range), sails Ezzy & Maui Sails, components were Chinook etc. (Kevin was saying he was getting a load of RRD boards in a few months also).
My mate rented from someone else at a higher price. Their kit was older and banged up, some sails were well used and according to him felt like table cloths. They didn't credit for no wind days and although nice guys just didn't seem to really give a ...........
Anyway, if you're heading over to Maui and looking for some good rental gear Second Wind are to guys to see.
Cheers,
Simon
I rented of Second Wind the first time I went to Maui, back in 1988
Glad to hear they're still doing the biz!
Great to hear, thanks for the feedback! Me and a mate are heading to maui in the coming weeks for a couple of weeks also and we have hired our kit through Kevin too!
With such great hire possibilities in Maui, it makes you wonder why anyone would even consider taking their own kit there (harness and lines excepted maybe).
Their Surf "Elua Makani" are quite good as well! I rent from Matt P usually, but since I go for 10 days in January lately(wife business) and Wind isn't good during that time, I do not book in advance, unless forecast is good than I call Matt.
When forecast is not good try other shop for just a 2-3hrs of renting and I used to rent at Hi-Tech, NP, Naish etc.....but lately, forget Hi-Tech for now!!! They used to be great, but lately, they do not upgrade their gear frequently, last winter was tipping point! I rented a 2014 Wave board, nothing wrong with a 2 years old board, but the board deck was a bar of soap..my 3 hours sesh...was a big rush trying to tack in front of big sets to catch them more than trying to hit the lop..very sad. They did not have good choice of surfboard has they used to have, so I tried Elua Makani(second Wind) and was quite pleased also. Another shop I would not recommand, unless money is an issue is Maui Windsurf Company. Their renting is not expensive, but you have what you pay for!! Matt offer more gear for less money. Island water sport was closing when I was there, so windsurfing is having rough time, even on Maui!
Any photos/vid's to share like cold and windless posts?
8-9 degrees on the coast this morning makes Maui seem pretty inviting...
ok here's one from yesterday, light winds but enough to get out.
No one else at Spreks, where is everyone?
Great time to come to Maui, heaps of good gear to rent, Ive got 2017 Flys from Adventure Sports NP

sorry Craig, will try to keep the rest to myself
There will be a contingent of 8 Vicco's heading over there end of next week, might catch up with you if you're still there.
awesome!! conditions are getting better and better, from light wind days over to big swell and 4.5 weather today
if you don't have gear sorted out yet, I'd recommend Adventure Sports Maui NP, heaps of gear, new sails, masts and booms, and SUPS etc, its a blast. Also if needing local knowledge/coaching, get onto Shawna Cropas, amazing wave sailor, heaps of coaching experience, knows the heart and soul of windsurfing in Maui. I think Ive died and arrived in heaven
