I am trying to get hold of a new or good condition Profoil Slot Fin. I know they don't make them anymore but I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get my hands on one.

yes, I know I am showing my age but I still reckon they were amongst the best fins ever made and the one I am currently using has served me well for over a decade or more But it's wearing flat

I appreciate any help.

What other fins have you tried? Anything made in the last 20 years?

It may be difficult to do so but sometimes its time to move on.

I had a slotted fin in a Hot Buttered board in the late 80s. Sure it was better than other fins of that time but I wasn't really sad when I replaced the board and the fin with something a bit better.

True Ames (U.S.) still make a slotted fin www.trueames.com/pages/windsurf
The slotted Enduro is a favorite of mine and many of my friends, it's still very popular.
People started poo-pooing slotted fins long ago but the true believers are still around. The thing about slotted fins is that they have no red line, in other words, there is no limit on which you can press the fin before it spins out. If it does, it snaps back, relieving the cavitation, almost instantly w/o needing to back off on your pressure.
Many of my friends who don't like them say they are too slow. Those of us that are using them are very hard to beat, they aren't slow, we use them in the ocean and on waves.
Ever do a face plant on the face of a wave, in the middle of a hard bottom turn, because the board spun out?
That doesn't happen when using a slot.

Hi Moby
thanks for replying

i am using new rand Pryde rigs and my composite wave board still flys lime new and the existing 20 yearold Pro Foil Slot fin works perfectly well and NEVER cavitates no matter the speed and surface conditions.

So all in all I am happy to stay in my 'fin warp' However and unfortunately I may have to move on.

Sorry being a bit facetious though it always amuses me when people go on about the old stuff. Looks like True Ames is the way to go if you want a slotted fin.

Thanks Mastbender and I appreciate the reply

you are preaching to the converted and everything you said is true - it's strange they aren't more popular - I guess it's an age experience thing

and thanks less for pointing out the Enduro - I stumbled across their website recently and they are my back up plan but I am really hoping someone in Oz has some old Pro Foils lying around in reasonable condition.

Maybe keep your eye on eBay, Gumtree. Of course posting here is probably the best you can do as someone may have one of these fins laying around. I'd assume you want them for a US style fin box?

The Profoil 'slalom' slot fin was an exceptional fin! I remember doing some sail testing many years ago and Amac poo-hoo'd my choice of fin. Told me it was too draggy and slow. We did some side by side runs anyhow and he was amazed it was exactly on a par with his favourite slalom pointer for reaching and off the wind speed!

I lost my last one years ago but have been trying to find old ones every since! The best bump and jump fin ever made!

I wonder where the moulds ended up...........

BTW, the Endure slot fin mentioned above is more like the Profoil slotted wave fin that they made. It was quite different in it's performance. I think the slalom fin was called "World Cup Slalom WS11".

It was a real shame when Multi-fin Systems went out of the Fin business. They made a lot of really good windsurfing fins, some of which I still use today for specific purposes. Or maybe its just for nostalgia?

Thanks Sailquick and I appreciate the advice on the Enduro.

I imagine somewhere in a dark corner of an isolated shed on a remote property is a box of brand new Profoil Slot Fins just waiting to be discovered or remembered!

I've got a 23.5 cm slotted wave fin. I used it all the time for winter front conditions >>25 kts. Loved it. Best fin for messy bump and jump conditions when over-powered.

I don't have a use for it anymore as I sold my last single fin.

See gsport.com

PM if you're interested in buying.

I have one of these, on my current favourite board. Never thought I'd find out I possess a desirable piece of kit.

Well Dragandrop you live and learn. It's a horrible feeling when you realise the fin you have had for nearly 20 years is reaching its use by date and can't be replaced. Hence my quest to find a another

Hey, I know what you mean. My 25 yr old favourite board is almost worn out, and I've only (after sailing for 5 years) just started to figure out how to ride it well.
