Shopping for my first board. ~70kg guy, aged early 40's. I have next to no sail boarding experience.
Told my blue-water yachting in multi-day races, and white-water kayaking counts for nothing - forget the X-it. Thoughts? And should I get lessons, an find out more about boards there - maybe buy an ex-rental...
Who else in Sydney area other than the folk at Balmoral Beach do lessons?
Went to look at a John Hall board. The 125mm thickness suggested a larger volume for a 2.7m board, yeah?
I was turned off by the one-piece mast, fearing a van will drive into it while atop my roof rack - Certainly not as easy to see as a sea-kayak.
The mast had a base that looked like half an octogon, and could not possilby pair with the more contemporary deck, anyway.
Went to pick up a Tyronsea 330 and gear today. The GRP 2-part pole instantly put many fine splinters into my fingertips and palm of my hands, so I walked away. Thoughts?
The width of this board was... daggy. Should I pull my head in and ride it anyway as a first board, developing basic skills.
I am surprised that Sydney sellers on ebay are wanting upwards of $150 for old wide boards - and they know nothing of the gear.
you need wwwwwiiiiiiidddddeeee. Something that is very stable, my suggestion is to nix the idea of buying second hand off ebay. You will certainly pick up something cheap but nothing is like talking to a crew in a shop that know what they are talking about. The crew at long reef are a great bunch and will give you the right advice. As far as lessons go the answer would be yes, but trying to find someone would be difficult I think.
O the general rule is that 1 litre of volume = 1 kg so as a complete beginner you need double your body weight so no smaller than 140 - 150 and even that may be too little.
My advice would be don't buy anything over 5 years old. Forget old gear, modern stuff is heaps more fun and your doing it for fun. I'm 75 kgs and bought a 120L JP exite ride and 5.7 Neil Pryde sail, carbon mast etc in 05 and sailed the hell out of it. could uphaul it in light wind and even take kids for rides. Sold it all last year on seabreeze for 1000 bucks. Bloke like you wanting to learn on it. he is fully stoked. good thing to learn on and will still be exellent light wind board when he's good. Keep an eye on seabreeze for something like that. Only problem is inter-state freight for boards is a pain in the arse.
Forget eBay and the classifieds. Buy from here. No really. And what The Phantom said above.
Any question you will get all your answers from here.
