I have the opportunity to go away for abit over summer.
The original plan was to just go to Wa but its a fair way to go lone ranger so am considering tassie for a few weeks in decemeber then maybe WA in jan for about 3 weeks or just go to WA for 2 months.
I'm after waves and wind I don't know a great deal about wind in Tasmania how many sailing days could i expect? How would that compare to WA
The other turn off is sailing by myself?
if you go to marrawah in Tas in December you will get 5 out of 7 days easy and the waves are off the chain, it would give wa a run for its money at times.
I would also consider this, never been to Tas and I hit to many roos driving to WA.. is there any flat water as well as waves?? what tack is it?
yes plenty of flat water where i live in Port Sorell and henty river and had pleanty of 42knots top speeds.with Hobart (dorans road) with 39knot speeds.
Never sailed Tassie, but WA is great. Planning on spending a couple of weeks in Lancelin in January. Waves on the outsite, flat freestyle on the inside... I love the place. I would probably go to one place for a couple of months and score all the good days. Maybe a trip up to Coronation as well if the forecast looks good. Enjoy!
i would go WA... tassie just isnt very consistent in december. it can be windy but a lot of it will be frontal onshore stuff. feb is usually way better for scoring the proper cross off seabreeze patterns.
only reason i said it was good was because henty river not far from marrawah where al is talking was quite good last year.
The two options are so different its hard to compare them.
To me Lancelin is about the full on windsurfing vibe (like Kan-aha in Hawaii) the warm water, lots of people to sail with, wearing boardies while sailing, euros doing crazy freestyle tricks on the inside and blasting through main break on slalom boards (its been a few years since I was there).
Tassi is more about the variety of locations, the changeable weather, the quietness of the beaches, exploring and sailing new spots, there are just so many places to sail most of them pretty much deserted except for the occasional fisherman with a three meter shark in a four meter tinny, a few dog walkers and lots of oldies in their two hundred thousand dollar campervans who want to tell you how they surfed Bells back in the fifties on a surfboard they had carved out of an old railway sleeper.
There are definetly more people on the water during Jan and Feb, Marrawah can almost get crowded with up to four people on the water at the same time. If you go to Stanley you might even see that rare species, the Kitesurfer!!!! ( Parks and wildlife have issued a protection order in the hope that they breed)
