Here is a list of the fastest sailors from GPSTC aged 65 and above.
Australians listed in yellow:
Plenty of strong sailors over 70, but not too many still going at 75.
Twenty years ago when I was starting to get into windsurfing, I sailed with a guy called Alwyn, he was over sixty back then, he is still going strong now, this summer I should loan him a GPS, he could smash the over 80's category.
Good idea - I'll have to loan Al my spare GPS one time at Budgy..Tb you have too much time on your hands..
& i got some power box weed fins alwyn can use dwn there, 28 n a 24.
Think he has a delta?
TB, I just did a similar thing, before seeing you'd already done it.
I wanted to see the percentage of older sailors. This is what I came up with.
Total GTC sailors on data base1518.
over 60, 105.
over 70, 14.
over 75, 2.
over 80, 1.
Sorry Herby looks like you aren't over 80 yet.
Had my first windsurf at 23 in the greek Is, and I want to see if I can achieve 50 years in the sport, so hopefully I get to 73 and still windsurfing, am 56 now. 17 more years.
That's setting the bar a bit high hardie, I'm going to have to be windsurfing at 92 to get my 50years in.

Great to see!
Look out Decrep'. I will be gunning for 40+ knots and the top of the over 65 list in just a few days!
I am aiming to crack 40+ well into my 70's, that or my body, whichever comes first.
My theme song from Jimmy Buffet:
"I'm growing older but not up,
My metabolic rate is pleasantly stuck,
Let the winds of time blow over my head,
I'd rather die while I'm living, than live while i'm dead'
Meanwhile I have a couple more days of skiing to do before the snow disappears....

Great to hear there's got some long time windsurfers out there and the speeds you guys are pulling is mind blowing
blew My mind ..never done GPS or speed times . Before ....but it's time ..
i do scream down the face of big ocean swell ..I'd be surprised on the speed .seem the fin is the only thing in the water at times ...
ONLY been sailing for 21 years .. surfed for 20, got sick of the crowd and spending half my life sitting around waiting for waves took up windsurfing ..best thing i ever done ,no more Agro .and dog eat dog . .good times ahead .keep the replies coming .

Well Mr D, you are fitter than me now, you sail further and longer than I do now, you get less fatigued than I do now, so If I'm still windsurfing at 73, no doubt you'll be sailing well into ur 90's

Be warned!!!!! It's very addictive,.
Join a GTC team if you get hooked, it adds a great new dimension to your sailing.

I've no doubt you'll manage that with no problems. As soon as you enter an age category you're the top of it.
But I'm still trying to crack 40, haven't given up yet.
It's just a matter of time and opportunity Mike! Are you up for a trip to Shark Bay with us in November?

I though the first Windsurfers came out to Australia in the late '70's? Did you build your own?
I started in 1980/81. Hard to remember exactly. Holy cow, thats 35 years continuous. How time flies when you are having fun. No wonder my friends call my gear shed 'The Museum'

The 40TH Windsurfer Class Australian Championships is coming to Balmoral (Sydney) next January 2017, so 41 years is possible if JJ got one of the first ones of the boat.
What about the old girls of the sea ..anyone know of any still sailing ?
Gees I'm glad I never had to use this gear ....looks like hard work .

Windsurfed in Durban RSA 1975 to 1979.
I think there were about 20 regulars - we had fibreglass clones of the Windsurfer

Started 1982 so only 33-34yrs
Pretty cool!! Noticed Robby Naish was on it. He must of been just a kid then. Didn't see Francisco Goya their, maybe he started later.
One R.Naish would've been in his early 20's I think. The lone Aussie in Mark Paul along with pretty much all the legends of the sport including some great women sailors!!!
My good old mate Henry took up sailing at 55, gave it away at 85, a few years back.
He misses it badly... Rode a 100L board and sails up to 7.0 Liked the 5.0 the best.
stay healthy and fit,
anything is possible.

And four sailors who still have their names on gear we buy today: Cabrinha, Simmer, Naish and Angulo

You got a few years on me JJ!
my first taste circa 77-full time since 1980 haven't missed a winter or summer since...and still itching for more
I've got a friend that has one. Just got him a 125 tabou rocket and modern sail.
He just needs tow to get used to it.Think the speed scares him.Not in the straps or harness properly yet.
