As the wind is always slightly changing direction, a horizontally-rotating cup is better, compared to a vertically-mounted fan (see below).
Others on this forum have offered advice on this subject previously, but I was unable to find the reference. Lacking the reference, you might consider:
The Skywatch Eole or Skywatch Meteos, available here: www.instrumentchoice.com.au/instrument-choice/environment-meters/anemometers/outdoor-sports-anemometers.The Eole gives wind information whilst the Meteos gives the same info plus temperature and wind chill. I've previously used the Meteos (and was very satisfied with it) until I dropped it.
Replaced it with a Kaindl Windtronic 2 which has wind info, but not the temperature info. I cannot find a dealer for Kaindl in Australia, but you might be able to. Here's what it looks like: www.my-best-kite.com/windtronic-2.html.

I have been using a Dwyer for wind measurements since 1968. Simple. One moving part (the bead). I even calibrated it once. Very accurate.

How do you do that behind your D19 surgical mask?
I went full on and spent the coin on the Davis Vantage Pro 2 weather station. Tells me everything I like to know especially the UV strength so you can judge how long is safe to stay out in the sun. It was a hard sell to the boss and she still shakes her head on the cost but I see her some times look at the console.
