I ride a 26" hardtail that I converted to 27.5"

the best thing I did was switch to a single chainring, I don't think I have had a mechanical failure since.

I just went to a 1x with a giant cog on both bikes. Love it. One less thing to worry about. Did you shorten you chain when you lost the additional chainring?

^^(edit), I don't recall for sure.

I'd say it would be shorter with the smaller front ring and the largest rear cog being only 4 teeth bigger than previous.

I often lay awake at night worrying about my extra chain ring.

Why you lying bed with a chain ring would be the first question?

Had a good session yesterday in the wet rainy and slippery Kalamunda Circuit!

With one big dirty Istaaaaaack Lucky im ok, was a hard fall. I was probably more hurt by a solid hip and shoulder to a pretty sturdy tree trunk that didnt move out of the way

I like the dirt still on top of my Gath helmet! A few solid scratches up there now!

yep; chain-suck with a bent chain, busted derailleur or a snapped hanger a couple of hours hike to the nearest main road would keep me awake...

Sweet setup. Let everyone know about your MTb injuries, that may deter some!

Just about to buy my first proper mountain bike.

29er rigid?

I asked myself that question at the end of summer and bought a 29er hard tail. I quickly realised that I should have just bought a full suspension job straight up. Anyway I now have an over priced bike to ride to the shops and around the street with the boy and a nice dual suspension for the trails.

The smooth quiet ride of rear suspension alone makes it worthwhile for me. It feels much safer too. Gravel rash and water sports don't mix.

And that gravel rash is from hanging around the carpark at loftus alone

Seriously if you are going to do any riding off-road at all it'll be a much more pleasurable experience with a duelly. And gives you the option to have a whole lot more fun doing drops and jumps ect if your that way inclined.

Well due to extreme peer group pressure- thanks guys- I put down a deposit on a nice new Trek Fuel EX8 27.5 yesterday. Can't wait to pick it up.

Haven't done a lot of mountain biking, but every time I've gone, on very crappy borrowed bikes, I've nearly died. Died from laughing so much, that is. So much fun, some trails just leave me giggling like a schoolkid. Riding the road bike everyday is a bit like speed sailing, but looking forward to using the MTB for some land-based wave sailing.

I've got a 2015 Scott genius 720 or 740 can't remember which one but its carbon. Done Wildside 2008 & 2010. Blue Dragon 2010. And few various small comps. Hanging out to go up to do the new Blue Tiers world class course up near Derby in Tassie.

I've got back into mtb about 6 years ago after a 18year break.
Best thing I've done. I'm 44 and fitter than I've ever been. I get a good whack of adrenaline a few times a week. Plus it's great to get away from the sounds of the city.
Be prepared for some big injuries financially and mentally, it will happen if you like to push your limits.
I ride more now than I windsurf.
Still can't beat a good Gnaraloo day but that's not on the doorstep unlike these trails.

For a cross over sport there is no better. Got back into riding couple of years ago and for last year it's taken over windsurfing!! Need to change that! Ps if anyone keen to ride up on Central Coast drop me a pm.

Been Windsurfing since 1980, took up MTB last year.
Started with a cheap 29" hardtail - after I broke my collarbone on that bought this baby. Dually = more fun on the trails for sure.

It's just like anything. Push it as hard as you want, you've got a good amount of control as to how much trouble you can get yourself in

Would be a decent bike to get started. Shop around though. This time of year you'll get a goooood deal on "last years" bikes.

Depending on where you like to ride. The Norco Sight will give you more downhill control. Love mine.
