Hi guys n girls,
I'm after a holiday destination. Would prefer it to have a hire shop with upto date windsurfing toys. Must be wave sailing but some Bay blasting is ok. I've surfed Fiji a couple of times but never windsurfing, does anyone have any experience of sailing there and no probably won't be hitting cloud break. I'm on the Sunshine Coast QLD so not really interested in wet suit n booties so definitely somewhere warm . I know what a woosie but I'm English and already done that. So help , love to know your experiences good or bad thanks people, looking forward to hearing your stories, Shaun
I went to Fiji twice and the wind was not so good. IN 3 weeks I think I got about 4 days of sailing, and the next time I think I got maybe 3 or 4 days out of 2 weeks.
They could have been just bad years, but I doubt it.
Also, the coral was no fun. At low tide it was a long way to get out. At high tide it was fine. Somewhere inbetween, there was always the worry about breaking fins.
If you go to Fiji ,you need to go to the outer islands .
plantation island was good to me . .I would take my gear .has chop to jump and you can hitch a ride to the waves .Tahiti ?
Maui is hard to beat. Do a clinic there. Best time ever.
mauritius is the most consistent wind. It has theee breaks. One for beginners. One for intermediates. And one eye. For experts and they don't let you take the hire gear on one eye.
Gnarloo is probably the best wave. But a long trip from qld.
Baja Mexico with Matt Pritchard is worth a look.
I am doing maui and Gnarloo this year.
Hard to beat Maui. Great combo of wind and amazing scenery for the other half. Some ok shopping although last time I was there the Aus $ was 96 US. I stay at Kihei and drive over to spreksville or Kanaha. Lots of Aussies around so always someone to talk to. Looking at house prices I want to buy and just move there. I get my gear from Matt Pritchard. Service with a smile and always helpful
Been going to Fiji almost every year for the last 12 years. June-Sept is the windy time. I go up for 12-14 days so that I get high pressure cycles. The last two years have been the most variable. Last year was the most wind less with 7days of no wind out of 16, 2015 was the opposite 6 days sitting on the beach wishing that I had my 4.2 and 78L wave board. Most of the time its 5.3-6.4 and a 100L FSW board.
I go up to Nananui I Ra, which is an island off the NE corner Viti levu, which picks up the trades a lot stronger than plantation island/cloud break etc, however it is flat water due to being inside the reef. Safari lodge hires gear on the island, however its not the greatest. I take my own gear. If you fly Qantas you get 30kg baggage allowance, which helps a lot
