So.... if you could travel to anywhere in the world that has great windsurfing conditions (for me, flat water and a constant 20-25 knots) however your wife hates windsurfing, where would you go? I'm trying Maui out next September. I'm originally from WA so have sailed most of it. Am thinking perhaps Greece in 2021?

Would appreciate your thoughts.

I've sailed Greece only once but it was really good. Flat water and 25 knts every afternoon.
For your wife, you can do a stop over in Singapore where the shopping is good and leave her there while you're going to Greece, pick her up on your way back.

Garda is beautiful, but rarely 25 knots.

Boobays, Shark bay in December. Lake George in February. No flying nessasary.

Not much at Shark Bay for a non windsurfing wife though. Robe is OK for a few days

Mauritius worked for my wife and I. We stayed at the Lux. We did touristy stuff in the morning which allowed me to sail Manawa (accessible by a short bike ride) on the afternoons the wind blew. Everyone was happy.

+1 for Mauritius, many options there.

But, Greece has much better nightlife, cafes and restaurants, and Greek/Turkish food is the best.

Garda. Fairly flat water. Wind in both directions every day. A little lighter, but you just go a meter bigger. Italian/Austrian food is great.

Don't do it.

If you want a windsurfing holiday then go windsurfing and leave the wife at home.

Then go on another holiday with the missus. Go wherever she wants to go. Do whatever she wants to do. Don't take any toys of any kind (except maybe a camera).

Arguably when she's on holiday with you then she wants to be with you. She doesn't want to be waiting for you to get your **** together to go sailing, or come back from sailing, or have a nap after sailing or post your sailing **** on Seabreeze.

She certainly doesn't want to compromise on flights so you can get extra baggage allowance and wait for your stuff to arrive after it gets sent to Bangkok via Frankfurt.

Maybe. Just maybe. You could go on a holiday with friends to somewhere with lots of non-windsurfy stuff to do and she can hang with them. On second thoughts, that's just more people to gang up on you.

If she loves you she'll be happy for you to go wherever you want ... without her. If you love her you'll be happy to go wherever she wants.

When you think about it, you only want the missus with you so you can start or finish the day with a bonk. Brekkie. Coffee. Big sailing session or two. Afternoon nap and bonk. Maybe another session. Dinner, Sleep. Great fantasy, but you can do that at home.

Well put, I tried the partner holiday to Maui. Same conclusion.

Partner holiday = 4 star min, buffet breakfast, pool, massages and shopping.

Windsurfing holiday = windsurfing

we went to Maui as family whirlwind-adventure vacation (that also happened to include daily WS ). so much to do there if you make the effort, but exhausting to do the WS and the rest each day.

Does the location need recreational activities for the wife? mine would be perfectly happy to knit or read. Some horse activity would be a plus.
Fuerteventura, or Tiree.

Have a look at Croatia - lots to do for non-windsurfing types. The coast is spectacular - even for just lying around and doing nothing. A number of rental places with good gear and consistent arvo winds.

Agree 100%, been there done that. No matter how you would try to keep your windsurf session short, it will be too long in her opinion. So the entire time you're out there having fun, in the back of your mind you'll be worried about her patience.
Not worth it, the best sailing is sailing with a free mind.

Went to Spain (Tarifa) with the wife a few years ago. On the beach side of the hotel was windsurf rentals, on the land side a horse stable. We were both happy as she loves riding. ! Plus the food and everything else was excellent, fairly flat water and very windy (in August). Hotel Hurricane - you can guess why its called that.

Hi, same situation here (non-sufing wife plus two kids to young to surf). Went to Maui this September.
Maui has perfect windsurfing spots like Kanaha or Hookipa where the NE-tradewind is funneled by the two volcanoes. But the point is that at these spots you have daily around 25kn of wind. So your wife won't enjoy very much to stay alone at the beach getting sandblasted.

Of course Maui has many beautiful places and quiet beaches at the lee-side of the volcanoes, diving, snorkeling, boat trips and shopping. But that means either you spend your holidays separated on the island, or she accepts waiting at the beach for you and gets a free sandpeeling :-).

Best wife-compatible spot I think is Kanaha if you are into freeriding (but no wave-riding). Perfect wind and bright blue water for you. And a nice beach for her, and some trees which give shade and wind protection. And no high waves at the beach, so she can enter the water also.
But like everywhere in the US you have no bars, restaurants, shops or anything at the beaches. Even windsurf gear you have to rent in the next town and bring to the beach by car.
In case you go to Kanaha, I strongly recommend Kanaha Kai for windsurf rental. A board and two riggs are around 55 u$/day, very helpful and friendly owner.

Kanaha:

Kanaha (doesnt look like, but 30kn this day - and dont let yourself fool by windfinder or other apps - these don't consider the funnel effect. The windsurfing shops there tell you to add 15kn to every forecast):

Famous Ho'okipa: Is good for waveriding, has these little pools, but otherwise not for swimming due to high waves and rocks.

To answer your question for any other place in the world it would be helpful to know what your wife likes :-) (and not only that she dislikes windsurfing).

best regards

Thanks Mariachi, we're booked to Maui for September this year for a week where I can sail in the afternoons whilst she relaxes and reads a book. Following this, we head to Oahu (shopping) and cruise back to Australia via Tahiti and NZ.

I guess my question was a pipe dream where those who like strong winds can co-exist with those who do not.

Thanks again.
