I was recently announced a winner in the 2012 Hunter Business Excellence Awards.
There should be a segment with the official photos on the awards night in the Maitland Mercury and Cessnock Advertiser this week.
I was the first one called up onto the stage and I managed to walk up without tripping over and made a speech so I'm happy... lol's. Even more importantly I managed to get the glass award home without tripping and breaking it!
I now have 3 winning awards and a HC from the Business Awards.I'll have to make a place to display them in the studio.

I hope you managed to put a plug in for windsurfing somewhere in that speech.

Have to think about how to do that next time..the problem with being first is you have no one else's speeches to get ideas from. I noticed everyone after me was giving their business a plug but not me..
I remember the first year I ever entered.I'd done my first ever mural 3.3m x 7m .I'd never painted anything bigger than 50 x 60cms so it would have been a challenge even if I was healthy but I was disabled at the time.

I couldn't use my right arm much ( my painting arm) as I'd get a headache so I painted it 95% LHanded .Wrecked myself on the last day using my RH but it didn't matter as it was done..
I think that's why I won but I wasn't expecting to win.I wasn't even going to go to the awards as I was too crook.Anyway I won and was the first called up..I was like a goldfish standing there with its mouth opening & closing..I muttered thanks and scrurried off..

Sounds good My paintings are more lifelike than a photo..Want a portrait of yourself doing that perfect gybe ( that you can't really quite pull off..) In your portrait you can be the sailor you want to be ! ..or put you at Maui rather than a dodgy location..

Its on the side of the Liquor barn at Kurri - Rawson st? Opposite the primary school. I also did another on the side of Kookaburra kitchens on the min road between Weston & Kurri. You can only see it going East.
They are getting a bit old now and a little worn in places although the bullocks still looks ok.
You can see the progressive photos of me painting them at this link
http://www.suelinton.com.au/pages/murals.htm
When I first started painting the bullocky mural on the wall a little kid peddled by on his bmx looked up and yelled 'HOLY ****!!!" I knew then it was going to work..
Kurri has 51 murals scattered around and you can take a bus tour or get a guided tour for $5 if you want to book one at the visitors centre. They are also in a book that they sell for $25.I only did 2 as with my shoulder problem I had to paint on smooth walls with little sponge rollers .I couldn't scrub the paint into brickwork and a lot of the murals are on brickwork.

To keep it to more of a sailboarding theme here's a painting I did to remember the good old days at Nobby's in the 90's. I know I've shown this before so apologies to those who've seen it before..

Some of you might recognise some of the sailors..I deliberately got a good likeness of at least 3 and the other is just generic..
The original painting looks better than this as the image quality has been reduced for the internet and copyright. Ps - it's for sale..

You must suffer for your art

Michelangelo was imprisoned on a scaffold under the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The Pope wouldn't let him down until he finished. They used to poke food up to him on a stick. They had another stick to prod him with. "Paint you bastard" they said as they took turns prodding him.
He didn't get a business award either. He was too slow.

Just as a matter of curiosity, do you apply any anti graffiti finish to your murals or is it unnecessary in your neck of the woods?

Some of the business awards have $ as a prize.. unfortunately ours just has the kudos..

Bugger suffering the old way.. although sometimes I wonder...
The mural was created as part of a community scheme and they put a finish on it.They also clean any graffitti off if necessary.
There hasn't been that much of a problem as they involved some of the kids at risk in the project and I think there is some respect for walls with murals..Also one of the organisers said that one of the local heavies had taken it upon himself to look after the murals and heaven help anyone who marked them!( that was a few years ago though & I think they have a little bit of graffitti on some of the murals these days). The idea was to make Kurri special and bring tourists in so I think maybe there is a bit of local pride.
The only problem I have had has been some kid getting a texta and making one of the bullocks pee..Easy enough to clean off..
This September is mural month so is a good time to go and have a mural tour - they include morning tea in the park before hand + some local shopping discount vouchers all for $5 per person

A professional artist is the same as any other business . I provide a service, experience and product for customers.
Too many hobby artists give the false impression that art is airy fairy & not 'work'.

How do you get customers? Particularly as you scored a commission for a mural having done nothing bigger than an a2. You must be a smooth talker.

At that stage they were just starting out and I showed her my animal work and did a small colour version that they loved. The main problem at that time was my health as I couldn't sit much and it took me ages to do anything as everything had to be in small doses or I'd end up stuck in bed with a headache for days.I asked what would happen if I couldn't finish it and she said I just wouldn't be paid and they'd paint over it and get someone else.
So I just had a go. They don't pay much and at that stage the standard of the earlier murals wasn't as good as later ones so they were impressed with my standard of work. When I presented the small colour version they said ' If it's half that good on the wall it will be the best in town!'
Everyone kept saying the bullocky was the best one in town at that stage. There have been some good ones done since.
How do I get customers? - referrals from happy clients , return customers ,promotion, the standard of my work and my money back guarantee.
Are you an artist?

I'm afraid Dezzas just stirring. I'm not taking the piss at all. I'm genuinely interested.

I'm a hobby artist - watercolour. I'm always impressed with anyone actually making a living from art. The world is full of hobby artists. Some of them very good, others more pedestrian. I'm a big fan of people like Charles Reid, Shirly Trevena and others. My personal aspirations are simply to do better, an achievement well within the realms of possibility

I'm impressed by your 'get it done' attitude. I suppose once you have solved a project at a convenient scale the job becomes one of just practical production - order the pant, put up a trestle, apply a grid and do it. Anyway well done.

Thanks . Actually I haven't done any murals for a while preferring to paint smaller portraits for people in the comfort of my studio.. the murals are coming up for retouching or even redoing soon which is going to be a hell of a job.. especially as I'm 7 years older..
