Ive currently got a ford territory 2wd and a family of five plus odd extras like kids friends to take windsurfing. This means if its just me the gear rides in the car with me but i only fit two boards and two rigs and one person in the car. If there is one more than me, boards go on the roof and the rigs fit inside. If there are three or more of us it means a trailer or two cars. Loading up five or more boards and rigs from 1.5m to 9.7m takes a while and if we stop somewhere i always think about the lack of security. I also want to go and sail a few places that only have 4wd access. Ive checked out a few options which are
1 landcruiser, patrol or hilux with a closed trailer
2 landcruiser or patrol with a big roof top box but doubt i would get 7 sets of gear in it.
3 f250 crew cab with long tray. Rare or $150k for a newish one
4 iveco daily 4x4 ideal except a bit low on highway comfort and probably have to buy new for $85k+ bodywork.
5 crewcab 4x4 ute with a chassis extension. Might be a good option. Can get 1m chassis extension for $6k. Almost worth a punt to see how it goes.
does anyone have the same problems, any solutions, or two cents worth?
Check out the "Trailer anybody ?" post here in general .
May be the ultimate trailer to go with the territory .
Thanks. Ive been checking out those trailers. Ive got a good newish galv 8x5 box trailer that i might make a canopy for. But territory will go because its only 2wd. I used to have an xf falcon wagon that had an lsd and that would go over sand i wouldnt even think of touching in the territory. Trailers are ok but hard to park. Maybe not as hard as a long wheel base truck? Everthing seems to have issues
BUS4x4 do Hiace conversions. Long way from where you are though.https://www.bus4x4.com.au/vehicles/2014-toyota-4x4-hiace-swlb-commuter

So why would a 2wd Falcon be OK but a 2wd Territory not? Have you tried it out? We rented a 2wd Territory for field work in sandy country once. (We thought we were getting 4wd). It was surprisingly good, had a rear diff lock. 4wd has only been common in the last 30 years or so, prior to that most of the tracks you're thinking about were probably well traversed by 2wd. Unless you've got money burning a hole in your pocket, keep the Territory, maybe get one of those tyre pumps and a Tirfor winch just in case.
Man you've got a crew all right ...I 'd get a good lock up trailer ..easy to pack up ..you don't even have to touch your gear or unpack it ..it saves hours of loading the car up ..just open the doors and its all there where you left it ..I have 4 boards 1 sup .10 sail booms etc..etc in mine ..I forget it s all there ..when its blowing grab a towel the family hook on and your off ..no packing ..no stress..
car ..7 seat diesel cruiser ...Ive got a Mitsubishi challenger with lock diffs.but only is a 5 seater ..V6 petrol drinks more than... Bob hawk

Diff lock on the territory and a lock up cover for the trailer is a good idea. Lsd or diff lock makes all the difference in sand
. territory with standard diff is useless in sand. Ok on lancelin beach but no good on loose sand. A diff lock and deflated tyres might be enough. Thanks ian k. Ive never liked 4wd. Big copromise on comfort for 1000km on tarmac to get through 5km of sand. Landcruiser sahara woild be ok though! Love the ford f650.
Is that truck a unimog?
another mate suggested landrover defender 130 or ex army landrover 6x6 dual cab perenti. Not sure about the truck like comfort though.
500hp audi might spin all 4 wheels a bit easy
Oh yeah i am looking for a 1960 caddy hearse with a 4wd kit and those crazy low rider hydraulics to lift me up when i need ground clearance. Might be able to make it jump over rocks too.
I thought the diff lock was standard on the 2wd Territory. Maybe it was an option?
The Territory is underrated if you don't need full on heavy duty. A great country road cruiser, bitumen or graded dirt. Best standard headlights I've ever struck.
I do like my territory. Its kind of a high rise arm chair and just like falcon wagons and utes ive had over the last 30 years. Despite an interior that falls apart, clunky diff bushes, busted ball joints, elict windows stuck, power steering pumps that leak oil on the alternator causing it to fail, dodgy door handles, and all the other old falcon problems that ford still havent managed to fix, the good out weighs the bad. My territory hss traction control which cuts the po we er and puts a brake on the spinning wheel. Not the same as a lock up diff. would love a diff lock option, will see whats out there.
Ive been pretty shy of taking the territory on sand. Might give it mor of a go. Im still pretty keen on other options
This is the way to go to impress the other windsurfers - and it guarantees you rigging peace for sure
So Ford never fixed the door handles on their cars? I remember the handles failing on my folks XE and XF Falcons around 30 years ago.
Those mast holders poking out the front would be enough to scare the krap out of anyone in a carpark rage scenario Troublemaker. They're a game changer.
Ford went one better than not fixing the handles havent actually snapped off in my hand on the au or territory but now sometimes a door or even a rear hatch just wont latch, leaving you either stranded, doing a door rebuild in the carpark or finding a downhaul rope to tie the door to something inside, or getting the passenger to hold his door closed. Think my falcon door needs more downhaul
hey troublemaker, great mast carrier.
thanks for all the ideas. The 4wd hiace or 4wd transit looks interesting.
