Thinking of trying some small weedies at Budgy instead of deltas so I don't have to worry so much about spinout when I do longer upwind tracks out into the chop or bearaway in the windier deeper choppier parts.
Wondering whether 23cms tribal weedies or smaller other brands would do the job..?
I will be using a 79ltre falcon with 5 + 6m sails in 20-30kts of wind..
Any experience with these or feedback?

Gun Sails weed Control 23 with its 50 degree rake gives you a bit more surface area for depth and gets through thick weed. It is also a very spin out resistant fin and fast as well. It makes a good compromise between a 45 degree or less weed fin and a 55 degree Delta.

Thanks. Locals does 50 degree work at Budgy?

Sue, I don't have Delta's but use re-shaped and re-boxed fins and have used them all at Budgie/Canton.
I have 25cm 50 deg. Use in 112 and 99 Falcon with 7.8 and 7.0 Evo's.
23cm 45 deg. Use in 99 & 79 Falcon with 7.0 and 6.4 Evo's
21cm 45 deg. Use in 99 & 79 Falcon with 6.4 and 5.8 Evo's.
19cm 45 deg in 79 Falcon with 5.8.
I have used the small 19 in 99 with 7.0 at Budgey in NE, worked fine.
I don't go as far into the shallows as Millsy, Mick etc cause it scares me. But I have never really hit bottom badly except slowing in gybes (which are crap anyway)
I found out the hard way at LG that I should've used a bigger fin with that chop at Cockies.
So my 2 cents says you can get away with quite small fins at Budgy. Look at Byrons posts etc.

Thanks..I'll do some research and get a non delta for those choppier days + Canton.
I might see if anyone has one I can borrow too to see how they go.
I use 18cm makani freemoves in my waveboards but I'm not real happy with the upwind ability although that could just be the waveboards...I go really shallow so I may have to stay out a bit if I get another fin but if I don't spin out I won't really care anyway.

from my limited experience:
- a biggish delta does not spin out in chop, I used a 21 with 84 lt board and 6.6 biggest sail
- even a high rake weed fin slows down in the thick weeds, much more than a delta, I tried a 24 50 deg. mxr.
So I would feel safer to ride a delta, spinning out is not as dangerous as catapulting, but last time I was at Budgy there were no floating weeds , so a weed fin should work now

Here is a pic of a modified Gun Sails 50 degree rake weed control 23 cut down to 19 for shallow NSW spots.

Powersloshing I never used to spin out but now prefer to sail pushing on the fin and having trouble with spinout..I suppose I can work on my technique but I need a smaller tuttle weedie for non Budgy days on my 79ltre Falcon. ( all my small fins are powerbox or US)
I've got the offer to try some 40 degree rake weedies. Would they work at Budgy?
Legless I suppose you'd need knowledge to successfully cut the fins down yourself..?

Happy Easter Sue
Oh and just move the rear harness line back a smidgen each time until it stops, when you get any spin out from fins, works a treat
I have a 23 Delta, (well it stated as a 23, probably now its a 22) but have used it on large boards and with a 8.6 no spin outs.

I could probably just go back to the technique i used to use with no backfoot pressure or try and be super in tune etc but I do love pushing off the fin to get upwind in chop.

+1 for Gun Sails Weedy. Here's one I cut down to 19cm... I haven't tried it since cutting it down, but it went great before the chop, so hopefully it still goes great. I'll report back when I get the chance to try it out.

Is it difficult to reduce their length without stuffing them up?

Hey Gareth... I just noticed that's my fin in your post but the picture was too small for my poor eyes.

Hi Sue. It took about 15 minutes of sanding and filing. Feels nice and looks good, so imagine it will sail fine. I'll give you a try next time I'm up at budgie.

So only good for those with Tuttle box then
Although shouldn't knock Maui, as I was given an older 48cm dagger fin to use in low winds and large sails. Am stoked with its performance, up wind and down wind. Suits my crap style obviously

Gun Sails Weed Control in Tuttle box or power box is $150.00 so a more cost effective way to get a G10 weed fin capable of going well over 40 Knots.
