Somehow the LG got left out of the list.

Hi Mike. I have consistently been seeing my Xperia tracking more than 10 sats and as many as 15. Do you see that many at any time?
Tracking more sats will certainly help accuracy of speed. But I am not sure that locational accuracy always correlates with Doppler speed accuracy.
on the bike ride both phones were using max of 12sats, I've seen more than that tracked, but not all of them are used, possibly because they are noisy, have poor signal or aren't in a good geometric position.
I'm not sure either Andrew, but in this case it seems the closest tracks to the bridge are using more satellites.
little hijack regarding the blutooth earphones from gearbest.
They're fine as long as they are not submerged.... mine died yesterday after I fell in and they got soaked a little...
So if like me you still do fall in sometimes.... not really worth it

Just tested Sean's Chinese phone, it's an Mpie Mini 809T

Seans Mpie Mini 809T, but so far it's only been tested on a car dashboard, and the file has plenty of gaps in it, so sensitivity is suspect. We'll know more when Sean takes it out under open skys.

OK here's a question for the gurus. Elmo's sent me his J1 files, they contain both .sbp and .gpx formats.
Here's the strange thing, the sbp file has a resolution of 0.019kts BUT the .gpx file's resolution appears to be 10x better at about 0.002kts.
Why is it so?
Does it mean the .gpx format is more accurate than the .sbp format? (somehow I doubt this)
Top pane is .sbp, bottom gpx.
So both panes are sorted in the "doppler" (speed) column so the speed progression is evident. The first thing you notice is that the track numbers aren't in quite the same order. Then looking at the two doppler columns the smallest speed increments are quite different, around 0.019 for the top pane and around 0.002 for the bottom.
If you also look at the "speed" (trackpoints) column you see some even bigger discrepancies, in one instance it has a 26 where the doppler is only saying 13. This is why doppler data is much preferred to trackpoints.
Mike the 26 in sbp table is a result from the altitude going from -27 to 28 then back to -27. That is one thing that the gpx file does not list and a clue I find valuable detecting spikes.
I think it is a bit over the top worrying about the difference between 1/50 knot and 1/500 th. I am constantly being surprised why my smart phone does some of the things it does so I am not surprised that the calculations for the gpx seem to have an extra decimal place over those for sbp...
David, altitude column is not in chronological sequence, so there's no way of knowing, from the above figures, how it got to +28 and back to -28, in one step or several.
Agreed 0.02 to 0.002 doesn't make a lot of difference, but in the case of the Xperia, 0.5 to 0.002 does!
If this is a real increase in resolution it kind of makes this whole thread redundant!
I haven't got a gpx file from the xperia yet, but it's the next thing to do, I'll report back on my findings.
Hi Mike. I have been trying to come up with an explanation since you sent me that email a while back.
The only thing I can think if so far is that it is to do with the internal mathematical processing of the raw data into the file format for output. If this is the case, the GPX data could very well be more precise, but I don't know. I was also trying to work out how I could test this theory, with no sound ideas yet.
I will set my Sony Experia to record GPX and see if it does the same thing.
Glad we're in the same boat daffy, I was thinking along similar lines.
I'll set my xperia to both gpx and sbp formats tomorrow, and see how they both compare to the GW52, that may give us a clue.
The interesting thing is yoyo was seeing the 1km/hr resolution on his train trip, so the display has the same res as the sbp file. But I guess that doesn't necessarily mean anything.
Well I made both sbp and gpx files today, but something seems to be wrong with the gpx file, can't open it with any of my GPS software.
alright, next time I'll get her to hold the chinese phone and the canmore
(Though she wasn't that happy about it, with me driving past her school...)
Cory just came round with one of thesehttp://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/optus-alcatel-one-touch-pixi-3-prepaid-mobile-phone-op3000641
$39 worth of Alcatel pixi, no nead to get a cheap phone from China!
Trouble is we can't figure out how to get it to record to the in house storage, and it doesn't have an sd card at the moment. So can't do any testing yet, Cory will put a card in it, then we can do some tests.
I can't tell from the office works specs page if it actually has a GPS chip in it. Do you know from other sources?
Same as the Alcatel One Touch Evolve 2 I have been using up here in the USA. Mine seems to have a GPS chipset and the accuracy is 0.019knots. Once you have loaded the app and recorded a file you should be able to use file manager app to locate the file. Here's the specs: http://www.gsmarena.com/alcatel_pixi_3_(4)-6933.php and here alcatelonetouch.com/global-en/products/smartphones/pixi_3_4.html#.VgTTS9KrSUM
I am now the humble owner of one of these Alcatel Pixi's. Unbelievable value at $29.50!
I managed to install GPS-Logit and it seems to run as it should. It makes a GPS-Logit folder in the phones memory and saved a file from a short test today. Since it does not want to talk directly to my Macbook Pro, I used Dropbox to transfer the file to the computer. Runs in GPS-Results fine in Mac and RealSpeed in Windows XP. A far as I can tell the speed resolution of the .sbn file is around 0.02 knots as suggested. More testing to follow, but initial impressions are positive.
Welcome to a brave new world Andrew, it always takes a bit longer for you guys down under to catch up. Load up your best speed mix and get some TOW.
Just waiting for the Spring storms now!
Actually, the speed resolution is not an issue at all for me as I will be posting with GT-31/GW-52 anyhow, as all the competitive sailors should. I will be using the App for on water feedback and in that role it will be very valuable!
I will probably continue to mostly use the Sony Xperia just because it connects to my Macbook Pro directly with Sony Bridge.
And it is important to stress using a really good waterproof bag! The Paqua is really good, but I think the one Roo found (H2O Audio) is fantastic. I have given it heaps of abuse in the snowfields this season and it has been faultless. Comfortable, waterproof, easy to use, good fit for the phone and has provision for waterproof earphones.
