To be sure to have a back up device ready just in case, yesterday i did give my gt31 a go after 3 tears.
While i was driving my car it showed the speed and the buzzer worked.
I then wanted check the scores in speedreader or actionreplay but i don't exactly remember how to.
I tried to slot in the SD card in my pc desktop. It sees the SD and it seems last data is from 2019.
Maybe GT31 recorded yesterday data in the device memory? If so,, after wire connecting pc-gt 31, how to set the locosys to be checked?
And still, how to check its firmware version and, just in case, update it?

Thank you and happy new "speedy year"!

when you start the device it should show 'card found', if you get instead the message 'card not found' try and reformat it from the device functions. To access the internal memory there is an option to transfer to card. Firmware version is in one of the menu options, to update the firmware you need the original software, not sure if it would work with new operating systems.
I have the manual in pdf format, if you need it send me a msg with your email address.

When i turn off the device it says "card not found".
Tried to find the reformat function but I'm not finding it.
Where to start from and how to?

Maybe the pc software doesn't see any new session because of the above issue?

if you have the GT31 util, you can download from the GT31 memory.
The usual problem is a bad connection in the card slot.
You can try using contact cleaner in the card slot.
If you get it to recognise the card, from memory I think there is a "save to card" function, that downloads the internal memory on to the card in SBP format.
That should have your latest sessions on it.

While i was driving to the new SD card store the gt31 worked (as i could hear the buzzer and see the speedometer).
Bought a new 32 GB SD and used that on my way back home. Device still worked same way .

Checking the tracks using speedreader and no records on both old and new SD's.

Going try to clean the device reader contacts with a custom swiffer but not sure about the success

I tried "brushing" inside the GT-31's SD slot but it still doesn't detect the SD card.

What's next?

Im pretty sure that the largest size SD card you can use is only 2GB, so maybe that is the issue, might be wrong one of the experts might know.

Yes, but no way to buy a new 1 or 2 gb card,,,,
Maybe my "old" card is still ok and problem is from device.

yes Boz I have the same info in the back of my brain 2GB is the limit. Try looking in old stuff, you find a 2gb card somewhere.
Or you could try online, here's Amazon
www.amazon.com.au/Kingston-SD-Flash-Memory-2GB/dp/B000EOMXM0?th=1

formatted the old 1GB SD but the gt31 still doesn't detect it.
I wouldn't want to buy a new card (2GB) to continue having the same problem.
Suggestions?

your last resort is to open the device to get better access to the card reader. Apart from the screws on the back there are more screws inside near the charging port under a sticker.
Also you could try and make your navilink program work on an old computer. Need to use a proper cable, some cables only good for charging.
Last, last: you can get the session's results in one of the menus and copy manually, but you would not have the file to prove it

what file system did you format as? I'm not sure if it should be fat16 or fat32

Just a tangent to the original question. I have been offered a new never used gt 31 to buy, is it worth it or should I look into something more modern. I have a gt31 with screen damage already.

If you get it cheap enough.
Depends what you want to use it for, and how much accuracy means to you.

It's still approved for posting to the GPSTC, but it's ancient technology, heavy cumbersome, not water proof and less accurate.

Modern devices will typically pull 3X the number of satellites, are fully waterproof and record data 2 to 5 times faster.

Another thought. There's 2 screws inside the SD card/usb socket compartment. If they are rusty, salt water has entered the compartment, so the usb socket contacts will be corroded.

If it's been sitting on a shelf for 10 years, the battery may not charge, if it's run down too far.

If you were happy with your original GT31 and if you can get it unused for a good price I'd grab it, they're still team chalenge legal and some of the fastest guys are still using them.

Today it was possible to check the old 1 gb SD. it seems it's damaged as it showed some on/off issue.
Going find a new one to check it out

GT31 needs the card formatted in FAT16. FAT32 no go.

For a new card, try a few small electronics shops or camera shops. I found one near me that had a stash of old/new 1GB and 2GB SD cards.

While waiting for a new 2 gb SD I did test my current one. Using my PC I tried to store pics or files in it and that worked. Formatted the SD in FAT 32 (as FAT 16 is no an easy task for me) and the gt31 doesn't see it yet.
Opened the device and it seems everything OK. Tried to clean the electric contacts with alcohol.
Don't want to close it before I can make a new test.
I don't remember how can I read (using speed meter) data straight from gt31 (bypassing the SD).
And still, is there a switch or something to store gt31 own data on the SD? When I try to save something it says "no SD found"...

I've found the best way to clean electrical contacts is with an erasure. That might help.

It's not going to work with fat32, once you have it formatted to fat 16, then you should be able to save to card.
You need the GT31 util, it's available from the locosys site in the archive.
Plug the GT31 into the computer and you should be able to download the inbuilt log.

Got the new 2 gb SD card.
Gt 31 keeps saying "no card".
I wonder if the device sd reader has a switch or something.
Appreciate any suggestion about what to check or try

It has almost certainly to be corroded contacts, are the screws in the compartment rusty?
This is a sure sign salty water has got in, that will corrode the contacts quick smart.
