Now that the Garmin 255 watches are approved for GPSTC, some problems I encountered with my Garmin FR 255 Music may be relevant to others. If you have a Garmin 255 Music, it may be worth checking if you see the same issues.
The first issue I saw was battery drainage after using APPro (great app, btw). A day after recording a session, the watch battery was completely empty (it had been at about 50% after the session, and usually drops at most a few points per day). The workaround was to start and stop another activity that used the GPS. My guess is that switching the GPS off when exiting APPro failed for some unknown reason.
The second issue I encountered that is relevant for GPSTC postings is the selection of all GNSS systems and multiband from APPro when the "System" settings on the watch are different. For best accuracy, APPro changes the GNSS system selection to all systems when starting, and also to multiband (if this has been set in the app settings - should be the default!). This works exactly as it should on my wife's FR 255 (not a Music), but not on my FR 255 Music. On my watch, the system settings are used when recording with APPro. Apparently, the settings changes made by APPro are ignored.
I'm in touch with Scott, the APPro developer, about this. It's unclear if this behavior is specific to the 255 Music, the firmware version, my watch, or a combination of factors. Therefore, it would be good to hear from other APPro users who also have a Garmin FR 255 Music. If you want to check files, an easy way is to use www.fitfileviewer.com/ and look for the "mode change" entry in "GPS events". Here's what this should look like:
Here's an example from a file created with APPro where the system setting to use only the GPS system was kept:
K888 sent me this just before Christmas: "Here is APProBondEdition-FR255-v407-pre13 which fixes the battery draining issue".
The two FR255Music watches I have running the latest version of APPro Bond stay in All systems Multiband if that helps. But I don't use any other non sailing apps on them.
I know I initially had to set 'all systems multi band' in the app settings, but not sure if this is now the default as I updated to the latest version and the setting stayed.
