Wow this thread has brought back some memories! How about the rope universal, wasn't that a piece of poo!
Gee WaterPistol.....how can I top that!!! Great picture of a seriously hi-tech sail. Is that a genuinely old fin or are you cheating there with new(er) stuff?
The old windsurfer sails were like an onion bag and a real handful over about 20 knots no matter how tight you pulled in outhaul. How the hell are you going so well there? I am seriously impressed.
Do you still have the wooden boom and wooden mast foot hidden in the garage or shed?
All I can offer are some old photos 1980-84. I've just bought a Wolverine photograph/negative to digital converter so I'm combing thru the old stuff.
My sandsailer was a blast....overblown skateboard trucks fore and aft and if the wind got up the best way to slow down was to head into the water!! Fantastic fun at low tide...I used to head north from Evans Head, NSW towards Ballina...if it was a SEaster I could get 10-12kms up the beach before I was too close hauled or before the tide made the rocks at Broadwater unnegotiable. Great way to exercise the dog too.. Pneumatic wheels off a hand-pull golf buggy. The bearings used to need replacing very regularly....wonder why!
I'd sail off the beach but there was no one else sailing there at all. I'd disappear miles out to sea without telling anyone....probably not the brightest thing I've ever done in hindsight but it was really magic with dolphins, manta rays and other stuff David Attenborough would be happy to interview. At that time, being young I was, by definition, immortal!
The blue stripey board was a swallowtail McTavish that had a similar profile to the speed boards of today....wide up front to get early planing but the old fins and wide arse made it kick like a mule at speed. It was always fun when a gust came thru, you leant back to take the strain and the wooden mast foot came clean out of the board...leaving you hanging in the straps flying a kite. Excitement plus. This was just before the rubber universal entered my life.
Oh the memories.
You young people today don't kno....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Don't worry Wozza, I will print up the bottom photo so the youngsters at work can be impressed by your youthful awesomeness and high waisted boardies I am sure they won't take the piss!!
