I did 35 knots on a Magic Ride 104 with a 5.0 wave sail, it was terrifying.

Thats a bloody big fin for those speeds on a 95L FSW

Must have required some input at times!!!

^^ I think it depends on the rider, their style, and the board. For me, deep bear aways over homicidal chop like we get at Boggy lake can cause fins to stall. I find using a little bit bigger fin can almost eliminate that. There's a few big speed riders I know who dabble with wave/FSW boards occasionally when it gets mental. They need that bigger fin just because of their style of riding a board.

Nice video Reid

I got a tabou 3s plus for those days when the slalom kit was too scary. Got it up to a bit over 30knots so far.

I'm not sure what drives the thought process of getting a board that's not at all designed to go quick, and seeing how quick you can make it go, but I'm a willing participant.

Sounds familiar. The lake I go to most often has a ~16mi / 25km fetch when the wind lines up right; the chop gets big enough that at my skill level, I'm fastest on my longest fin.

Then again, I'm not fast at all, and this is with a 9.5m sail in 15kt wind.

4.2 sail with 31 freewave fin is really out of wack. I have similar RRD boards for the last 14 years, 85L and 90L and the biggest fin I put on the 90 FSW is a 30, K4 Fang or Tectonics Falcon, with a 6.0! My RRD is 2019, 60 wide, same width of the RRD 95 2008 (that came with a 29 fin).

The video is nice, but I really doubt that instant reading of 30 knots. Really, I never crossed much more than 28-29 knots with my RRD, very overpowered with a 6.0 Point-7 ACX. The rails of the board eventually catch, as you see in Reid's video right when the gopro thinks it is going 34mph (and of course the second you catch the board slows).

Maybe be it is me, but Reid ... get a GPS device! It is fun to push a FSW to its speed limit, but the gopro is probably just showing spike artifacts.

I did 30 knots on my 2010 RRD FSW 96 on Port Phillip Bay which is rough. They were quick boards as the rocker was really flat, almost a slalom rocker. 30 cm stock fin from memory.
Did 35 knots on my Atomicsurf Fusion Freewave 105 litres with one of my 30cm freewave fins and a KA 4.7 Kamikaze wave sail at Invy. That board has 5mm of tail kick so the speed surprised me.

I've done just over 30kts on my 2013 Kode 103 and 30cm wave fin , once with a 6m Gator and once with a 6.3 KA Race. Both sessions were in 20 to 25kt wind in around 30cm chop. In similar water state and wind, I've done 35kts on Slalom gear.

Both Spotty and I have both done 40+ knots on Wave boards with a wave sail at Sandy Point. 30 knots in strong winds and flat'ish water is a doddle there. Add waves and it is completely different story.

Back in the late '80's I 'saw' >30 knots on my Speedwatch sailing on Lake Wellington, Victoria. Easterly wind around 25 knots and sailing moderately broad between the 2'-3' wave lines on a self shaped 20" wide all round Polyester 'slalomly' kinda board with a LOT of Vee- concave. Not really a freewave board, but nothing like a modern slalom board either. Of course, the speeds seen on the 'Speedwatch' where not able to be saved, not verifiable and may not have even been accurate as they were driven by magnetic pulses off a tiny prop attached to the training edge of the fin. But it still blew my mind then, and was a fun challenge.

Spotty has achieved over 32 knots on the Windsurfer LT with a standard sail and rig only modification is a weed fin by Martin Love. He deserves a medal for that courageous effort. I think there is video somewhere of this effort by Spotty but I can't find it. Prior record on an LT is 25 knots with standard fin and standard rig. Remember the world record in 1984 was about just over 30knots on a short board and a wing carbon rig piloted by Fred Haywood. And a LT can do over 32knots today ! Reading the notes Spotty believes he can go faster. Endless Progression.

i did 28kts on a similar vintage Kode 87 with a 4.7 North Ice in a flattish spot in 1m swells + 30cm chop.

wasn't out to try to do that, but the opportunity presented itself, so i sent it.
