Come along to Kyeemagh on Botany Bay this wk end for the inaugural Windsurfing NSW GPS/Slalom Freerace event. The first of four potential race meets this season, our first race will commence not before 1.30pm on either Saturday or Sunday (forecast dependant) with the call made on Thursday after 5pm.

Freeracing is an evolutionary discipline proposed by Ian Fox from Starboard, as the basis of an ongoing national championship in Australia. Turn up with what ever gear you have, a GPS unit, we’ll set a boxed course on the bay to suit the conditions, collect your GPS files at the end of the day and collate the results. They’ll be a winner on the day and a Series overall Champion, with prizes kindly donated by the generous folks at Windsurf n Snow.

We hope to run a couple of 1/2hr long sessions, as opposed to the traditional one hour long category, with the winner based on the best average overall scores as per KA72.com & GPS Team Challenge criteria across the 6 categories of; 2 sec peak, 5x10 sec Average, 1/2hr, Alpha Racing 500mt, Nautical Mile and Distance travelled.

The minimum condition for racing will be 14 knots on the course area from 1 minute before the start until the duration of the heat.

Join your local windsurfing club for your AWA Public Liability insurance and the event entry fee is just $20 on the day, or pay for all 4 events online at, tour.windsurfingnsw.com/join/

Further updates to follow so stay tuned and see you on the water this wk end.

Adam,
I take it this event is GPS only, no slalom races to be run?

I believed it was a GPS half hour around a figure 8 slalom coarse, though above Adam says they are setting a boxed course.

All the forecasts at this stage show insufficient wind at Botany, but enough to run at Sanctuary point. If the forecast remains poor any chance of a change in location?

Bruce, yes that's correct, GPS is taking he place of slalom this season.
Dean, in theory it's a Freerace event so nothing to stop us from running our GPS units with Formula gear, we may need to based on current forecasts?
And KA360, I think we might keep it at Botany at this stage. We can schedule another at Sanctuary point in the future for sure though.
At the end of the day, these events are all about ease of organising and welcoming in as many sailors as possible. The hope is that if we keep it simple and make it as potencially fun as possible, we might see a few more guys and girls join in

Gday everyone,

With the forecast for Saturday looking light, the decision has been made to RESCHEDULE the event to the next day - SUNDAY 19TH.

Location is still the top (new) carpark at Kyeemagh on Botany Bay. Get there around lunchtime to register and socialise with other sailors, and we will aim to run a couple of half hour freerace sessions by mid afternoon when the wind fills in.

Don't forget your GPS with Memory Card. If you have another kind of GPS (Garmin, Canmore etc) please bring along whatever you need to get the files off the device (ie cable, software etc) so I can copy your file to my laptop and process it on shore.

See you there,
James

Went for a tune up yesterday in the southerly. Sailing flat out for half a hour is quite draining actually. Hopefully it all goes well for everyone giving it a go.

Once everybody gets comfortable with half a hour we could discuss a hour format? 1hr is a category on GPS team challenge.

If its really windy and good flat conditions it would be perfect for a 1 hr Personal Best.
