It looks very doable if the conditions are right. What do people think? Anyone interested in having a go in a small group?
I have not done it but people do. The next weekend we have a reasonable sea breeze I'd be keen. It will be a bit safer with two or more so we can keep an eye on each other. Seeing different parts of the bay should be interesting too.
I'll document it with the gopro and release unedited footage
And why would that be so diffcult. I am only a beginner and I thought about doing it. Just can not involve any upwind sections since I am not vey good at those.
So maybe a few people would be better so they can give me a tow.
Oh sorry ,was thinking aloud
The crossing would not be that difficult with a pleasant NE seabreeze and in the scheme of things really not that dangerous. However there probably isn't that much traffic out in the middle so having a few people out keeping an eye on each other isn't a bad idea incase of equipment failure or injury.
I was thinking, launch from the new carpark and head for Bonna Pt Reserve. If we get a day with a 15kn NE, we should make it across in under 30 mins easily (it's about 5 miles). Should be good fun.
Moby, Gopro would be great.
Razz, I'm fairly new as well, so you'd have at least one in the group with similar skills/ability.
It's a great run, but be mindful that the NE picks up off the end of the runway. If it's too light to plane from Kyeemagh to the runway, it can still be strong enough from the runway to Kurnell, often 5 knots stronger.
It's a safe run in a NE - any gear breakage and you'll end up on a beach somewhere. It might be a good idea to pack a mobile in an aquapac. I have the coast guard and Maritime programmed on an old phone.
...one more thing, head off early, as the angle of the NE wind changes as the day progresses. Keep an eye out for white caps right out in the bay when the NE starts to pick up. The angle should be right to head off the end of the runway and aim for the point. As the wind picks up, you'll need to head for the wharf / ship. If it gets too late/strong, the wind angle will ne too far from the north, and you'll have a hell of a time getting back.
Here's some tracks that I did earlier, where I did some Kurnell runs early in the day as the wind was picking up. You can see the wind angle changing each time I went over and ended up further to the east.
Yeah, Mike is right. Very doable.
Or if you are a bit mad game like the Prince of Pittwater (Mr Alpha until proved otherwise),
you can just push on out the heads
HI,
I also thought about trying that stretch.
I always feared going past the end of the runway as I am not the best sailor, but if a group of us go and we stick to the same speed so we sail as a pack then I am in for that.
With Mobydisc and the gopro, what a sail that would be capturing our fear and joy.
Well let me know when you guys intent to go and that the conditions are not gusty hopefully a nice 15knts because the only sail I have is a 6.6.
Thanks boys
Kind Regards
Walt
Sounds like an event brewing!
I'd be in if I'm free at the time, haven't done that trip in a long while!
If the wind is up this weekend I don't think I can do it. I have family over and my van is being pressed into passenger duties. It may be possible to get out but I doubt it.
The next weekend we are heading up to Port Stephens. Hopefully we get a few NE weekends in Sydney over February and March.
I have done it by myself. I was on big gear and went out early. It was picking up, and I was starting to get a bit anxious on the way back. I would do it again by myself, but definately better with someone else.
When you first go out it looks about double the distance to the runway, but it is alot further. You will be starting to ache on your back foot if you are not used to long periods on the same tack. I planed fast all the way there and back (well powered). I would be surprised if it took me much more than 30 minutes there and back. was probably travelling around 18-20knots average speed.
Cheers,
Adrian
Saw this post this morning, and went I got to Kyeemagh I thought, what the hell, pretty easy going on 6.5 and freestyle board. Bit slower on the way back, with a few lulls coming of the plane for a few minutes.
Turned up at the shop on silver beach or something had a milkshake and went back :-) 40 minutes or less.
Ken an I did this run from kurnel to the pools at sansouci
we were on 5.2 sails on 92 L slalom - wind around 25-30 knots.
The GPS shows the run took about 11 minutes one way across with avg speed of around 20 knots.
