Hi there, I am shifting down to the Sanctury Point area from NQ and my main board is a 101 Futura with 6.5 -7.5 sails and was wondering what would be a good general weed fin to start with. I would be sailing Illawarra, Wollumbula and Sanctury Point. I am heading overseas this week and was going to keep a lookout for a fin.I know that I will end up with a collection of weedies but would like a suggestion for a start. Cheers.

Lake Illawarra is really shallow and you'd have more fun with a 20cm fin or less in the current pattern of winter westerlies. In summer, you would be out in the main lake and I reckon a 25-30 weedy would be the go for a Futura 101.
If you're at Sanctuary Point, you can sail the boat ramp with a pointer fin, with the occasional jump to clear the fin, unless you want to head up into the weed beds for some great flat water speed, then you'll definitely need a weed fin - probably a 20cm delta or a 25cm weedy.
Like ka43 said - Keef's your go-to man for weedies on the south coast.
Good luck getting a fin off Keefy! He's like Gollum with those things...
Just when you think the fin he's loaned you is working fine and he's going to sell it to you, along comes those famous words, "not my PRECIOUSSSS!!!!!" .... and it's gone. I've heard brown-nosing helps though :-)
I ride a 101 Futura in Sanctuary Point and a weedie is a must. Anything around the 25-28cm will be fine (unless you ask Keefy that is...)
Look forward to catching up! Oh, and you may need to look at a 5.5m for when the strong N Easters hit in summer. They're bloody great!!!
If your futura board is red, you might be able to get a Keef red weedie
otherwise CRAIG COLE is worth contacting, he has a new line of primbee signature weedies due to hit the market, we are still testing them, but it's the must have fin for South coast conditions
Sanctuary Point is easier, any old weedie will do, it's primbee and Lake W that special fin provisions are required
good luck for the move south, look forward to meeting you
dont park in tony polony's car spot at SP
The other thing to do is look at the fins being used on the posts on Gps team challenge, the teams that sail at primbee were there Sunday and Monday, so you will see the fins in the write ups from those days
I think there's quite a few people getting around those spots with custom made or modified fins. I've been using a Gun Sails Weed Speed 23cm that I cut down to 19cm. It works a treat. When there's a little more depth I'll use a Unifiber Anti Weed Lessacher FWD 24cm. The Uni fin is my fav. I'll probably buy a 22cm and cut it down to 19 or 20. I'm not a big fan of the deltas but plenty of people swear by them.

larko your a clown nbr there's one thing you will notice on the east coast of nsw is most sailors only have one ear and brown noses , it's "weird " take last sunday at primbee for e.g. I guesstimated at least 50% of the sailors had one ear chewed off and fat brown nose , even Matt and Chris from the DD's were brown nosing around my van
nbr don't get me wrong because most area's are different where you have large tribal gatherings , take the Mid-North-Central Coast Marauders for e.g. there all on a suicide mission , don't get me wrong there a great bunch , the word is out they have a huge ceremony to initiate new members into the tribe, there also presented with a delta S and the mission then begins for the first member to reach 40knts in one piece .
shear tip and Dezza has given you an idea of what the go is ,except you need to be a gustbuster to get your hands on some custom fins for the conditions
we will all be looking forward to catching up but also beware , shanky point has powerful n/easters and you will differently need a small sail and possibly a smaller board than the 101

as Dezza said these fins are still at the early stage with shallow water and chop and big gear in mind
if you want to sail the weed beds at sanctuary pt you need a shallow fin, as well as a fin that will handle chop ,
the 30cm fin should handle an 8mt sail on Dezza's 111 falcon as well as get into the weed beds as well as have enough lift when in the open water
the 25cm and 27cm should be good from 6m to 7.5 on a falcon 99
either way the fins are designed for wider boards /weed beds/ chop /bigger sails
Many thanx fellas for the advice. Will get a general weedie for Sanctuary Point and sort out some smaller ones when down there[ get a rat suit and start brown nosing]. Looking forward to the move and sailing some flat water. I do have a smaller board and sails which I am hoping to use at Gerroa , but yes I will need a smaller sail for the lakes and Basin. Should be down that way mid August, be good to catch up. Cheers Nigel FNQ
that small one looks nice keef, is that another prototype for the dezza series?
no that's the fin you used at primbee on sunday hopefully more water next time
Keef, (fin legend)(insert non existent brown nose emoticon)(Laurie you need to look into this) are you getting weed stuck between overhanging leading edge of the fin and board and if not what are you using to stop it. I have just replaced the foam tape from clark rubber on my delta, but as usual bottom out in Budgy opens the leading edge of the fin a fraction then the weed speed is more weed than speed.

the brown nose has been up before dean no matter what you use it wont work because the tip has movement , the best way out is nothing , just put some very fine plastic on your board and lay some single strands of wetted out glass on the plastic and wait for it to start to gel then insert the fin into the box, tighten up the front screw so it pulls the fin down into the box and the back of the fin is slightly proud , when it has gelled pull the back of the fin down so its level with the board
you wont have trouble with weed and less likely to damage your board because its a perfect fit
