What is a good location for a SSW this weekend?? Is it safe to sail around Kyeemagh, or at the slightly southern launch point at the lower end of The Grand Parade?
too much west in it for kyeemagh - will be off shore
foreshore road will be pretty good angle for flat water -
La Pareuse for some bump and jump
not enuf south in it for dolls/ sandringham
Cheers Roar, very useful;.
I remember reading someone said the water around Port Botany (foreshore) is pretty bad.....anyone has experience of the quality of the water there?
Mind you I have also read that the mouth of Cooks River is toxic (and I am a regular there too!! :S
easy, this is what I found after sailing here for over 10 years:
best spots (in my opinion and for what I like in flat water sailing) in bold:
S: Kyeemagh
SSW: Dolls Point, Foreshore Road, La Perouse (can be ok but on a big swell you'll get a lot of cross chop bouncing of the wave break across the bay)
SW: Kurnell (slightly off-shore), Foreshore Road, La Perouse (probably the best direction for La Perouse)
W: Kurnell, Foreshore Road, La Perouse (a bit gusty at times)
NW: Kurnell (probably the best spot for NW), Foreshore Road (Ultra Gusty), Kurnell (Ultra Gusty)
N: Dolls Point, Kurnell (on-shore)
NE: Kyeemagh, Dolls Point (not as strong as Kyeemagh but more consistent), Kurnell (can sometimes be stronger than Kyeemagh)
E: Kyeemagh, Dolls Point... real doesn't matter where on the Western shore you'll as you'll be sailing parallel to the beach. Usually comes with a lot of rain but sometimes big swell pushing in through the heads. Water quality is pretty iffy at best.
SE: Kyeemagh
Thanks Steh, that's really comprehensive. I did notice that Foreshore is NOT for under ANY conditions.
But I also noticed that your wind preference is often "onshore'ish" - I am kinda a fair-weather, flat watered, and recreational sailor!!
But thanks for all the locations you mentioned.....I am sure I will tick them off my places to visit one-by-one. I have only really sailed Kyeemagh, and only try to go only during NE, or N'ish days.
I reckon wait till Monday and then head down to somewhere on Botany Bay. The wind will be a little more south so more options.;-)
Drive down to the Illawarra, The bom is saying "damaging winds up to 100km/h....how much fun is tomorrow going to be
.....Bring your small kit and get your b@lls out of the wife's handbag, it's on.
