Someone was asking about beginner's spots around Bris recently.
I sailed at Sandstone Point yesterday and that's pretty good - shallow, sandy bottom, flat water, safe, accessible, scenic. However there are some reefs around and I believe there are some sharp shell fish somewhere. The south easter was almost directly onshore but the water for some reason was quite flat. I was there at high ebb tide. There were some nicely shaped bumps rolling through about a km away towards Bribie and typical open bay bumps out by the beacon to the south.
I had a sweet sail on an old JP freestyle 93 (an excellent freeride board btw) and a 5.8 Ezzy SE.
hi dave,
sandstone point is a magic spot, i learned to use a shortboard there and it was my local spot for many years.
blasting along the flat water over to bribie and hitting the rollers is to much fun.
i used to do a bit of speed sailing there also. i think it stays flat as there is a bank further out (2km) that kills the bay swell. in a big SE you can wave sail the bank. usually to get to it we would launch from bribie to prevent the huge upwind sail.
the oysters are at the end of pebble beach towards bribie. there used to be an oyster farm there. the beachmere end of pebble beach i'm not sure. we always sailed out towards bribie. i did walk back from beachmere once when the wind died and it was very muddy all of the way.
it only works with a high tide. i'm keen to sail there again some time.
there is also another "secret spot" near bribie that gets very strong winds during a northerly. great bump and jump spot.
