Hey, i've posted almost same thing once before - didn't get so much response.

But anyway,

If you're a windsurfer, living in or nearby Hervey Bay I would like to talk with you about the conditions and the spots.

I'm from Denmark, coming this July for homestay - and I'm bringing my windsurfing gear!

Isn't Burrum Heads nearby guys? I've never been there but I hear it's quite the thing if you like speed sailing.

Not much response

The entire windsurfing community in Hervey Bay
ie the whole 3 of us responded to your last post

www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=44576&SearchTerms=hervey,bay

I'm afraid there ain't a whole lot more to it than was said in that post
however if you've got any specific questions......fire away

The population has grown Ducati. We moved up about 4 weeks ago but I havent had a sail yet. Hoping todays forecast might ease my pain this afternoon after taking the missus shopping in the bay. Where should I head for? Scott suggested south side of the harbour 2 hours either side of high tide?

Well uhm yea, you're right - Couldn't find the other post so I just wanted to catch up with you guys again.

Anyway, I just wanna hear we could do some surfing when I arrive? I'm not much of a speed sailer I rather do some jumps and turns but not on the big waves.

The thing is, I'm not allowed to drive as long as the school is my guardian -.- even thou I have drivers license. And I can't go half a year without surfing, and when I'm in Australia?!

So it could be nice to be introdused to the surf community of 3 people in Hervey Bay ;P

Sorry Niklashb, there's probably more like a dozeen or more sailors,
but only three or four of us 'desperates' who sail on a regular basis
and even less who post on "Seabreeze" regularly, thus the lack of response.

Most only dust off their gear when it's 25kn+ and another few who only sail at Gattakers Bay in a Northerly when there's a 1-2m swell.
I know it's unbelievable but some actually put their work before sailing

HBay condition are BnJ, choppy with abit of swell
July Aug. is gusty crappy offshore southerlies but still great fun with a sand bar about 500m out and the waters warm. We rig just west of the pier
Sep. thru Dec. is absolutely magic onshore northerlies, rig up anywhere out the front, blasting along km's of bewdiful beach and did I mention the water, even warmer but Shhhhh don't tell anyone.

Well yea same here where I live, som surf some don't. But the thing is I NEED to surf A LOT in Australia.

Anyway what does BnJ mean?

Yea it's nice with warm water, in Denmark we're lucky if it rise above 17'C. But around this time it's only around 12'C+ so it's a bid chilly...

I hope I can catch up with you guys later.

coming from denmark, you will only require a g-string or a mankini as ducati normally wears during scurvey bays winter!

Ducati,

Are you still launching near Daymans Pier. Man, I have moved to just opposite Margaret Street.

I hate the rock wall at the Pier. Margaret Street has a nice sandy path and a long reach.

DAMN my secret spot is out (not that I think that it is a personal secret )

On the subject though, Gats is great (though I miss it's good days due to work commitments). Burrum is okaaaaay (the lack of set up area really sucks, but it REALLY BLOWS hard). The Pier has good set up area BUT the rocks really do hurt bare feet, and that sucks when you are carrying your gear to the water and ..... OUCH. For a SE'er go to the Aquarium or a place I call "Points North", or you could try Enzos.

Gats still stands as my favourite. It really just ROCKS (just beware where you launch. Or ask a local). There is a video of Gatakers on You-Tube:

There is a short clip of me from 1.09 - 1.11 (red and blue sail), and few times thereafter.

The other thing that concerns me at Burrum Heads is that it is a river mouth into the sea. Good fishing + river mouth into sea = sharks. Any sightings of sharks. I know we are usually out of the water most of the time BUT if you are waterstarting ...... and unfit (ME) ??? NOT that I am going to write the place off anytime soon (it really is a great windsurfing spot)

Much of a muchness as Ballina Justin but sail more often thru winter not as c-c-cold

The vid is Gattakers Bay in the northerlies Sep. thru Jan but only about 2hr either side of high tide so not often whereas U can sail at any tide round the corner in the Hbay

Yeap, what Ducati said .

It is a great spot BUT it is really tide dependant. When it is low, .... it is low (and usually windy). When it is high it is usually not windy (hahaha sometimes). BUT when it is high tide and windy from the North (a good Summer that is about 3 - 4 times a year, maybe more ), it's "Both Barrels LOADED"

I bet Burrum would have been nice last Sunday (23/5). I sat on the nice warm couch, thinking how perfect it would have been, and making up excuses how I couldn't make the trip to there. Damn I'm a "sad arse"

Maybe I'll go there this Saturday if it looks good.

Fanatic I couldn't be bothered making that 'epic 20min trip' ALL the way up to Burrum either
Admittedly High tide B n J is great at Burrum

BUT if you're like us and find "speed sailing just a tad boring"
Hervey Bay as good as anywhere even in a southerly.
We've been sailing out the front here at half to low tide (including last Sunday) in offshore southeasterlies
So sorry no excuses

that day the wind was very good ,up to about 30kn but the waves and wind angle can be much better . believe it or not years ago this happened a fair bit as arnold said sept thru dec. we have even had near unsailable days when 4metre was to big.(this was a long time ago but) generaly best waves are on incomming tide with n/nw wind. 20kn +.

Hi Niklas

If you are buying gear, there are no shops closer to Hervey Bay than Caloundra You've got Sunshine Coast Sailboards & Al Greens shop is just around the corner.

Hopefully you will bring some wind with you, haven't had a decent sail for several weeks now.

Hey Niklas, don't know what sort of gear your after but chek out the ads in
"Ploppy"s profile he had a board and heaps of sails for sale.

Wind is pretty hit n miss till the northerlies arrive, so no one posts where and when,

The 'graphs' on Seabreeze ie Qld Central and Sunshine coasts are a good forecast

but chek out these for more up to date info and subtract at least 6knots

hi dafunk, if you sailed the bay a while back i would know you . maybe we catch up when the north wind arrives in sept (hope). lee and pete still sail off pt.vernon if wind is 25kn or so s/se but no else usually there.
beware if sailing pt.vernon during runout tide if you have gear failure or wind drops out it is not a nice swim .
in se wind launching from aquarium can be good but again during out tide on big tides the current is fast and gear failure if your over near round or woody island you will need rescue probably. still it can be a lot of fun there.
sth harbour still good if the wind is up but a lot of the developement at harbour has caused the wind to be a bit more up and down. (even though it is all downwind from the harb).
we have had great days at gatakers and along the esplanade on low tide the last couple of years .

No need to post here when we go out, if there is the slightest chance of an enjoyable sail Ducati will be there, i can usually make it most afternoons and every weekend.
