Thumbs Up

I have a dozen or so sessions on this sail, over both fin and foil, and thought you might like to hear some thoughts. This is a two-cam sail with both cams below the boom, built mostly with Point-7's trademark UV-Resistant smoky-grey monofilm, although the luff sleeve is Dacron. It's intended to be used as a Freerace style rig on Foil and Fin both. I'm rigging it on Point-7 80% 460 SDM mast which is the correct spar (the 100% Carbon version is much more expensive) with a Point-7 extension set at 38cm. I'm 100kg, 68 years old and not as aggressive as I once was. I like low-end grunt to minimize the need for pumping.

Performance first - like most Point-7 designs it's very, very fast once up and planing, and will handle a lot of wind. On a fin I've had it out in 22kt with some crazy higher gusts and felt completely comfortable - no shifting of the draft at all. I've also sailed it in 18 over a foil and felt similarly in control. Once correctly set up (more on that below) it rotates positively but with a heavy bang. Jibing is normal on a fin but on a foil you really want to make a racing-style jibe because the sail is never neutral. I don't think it accelerates from a standstill as aggressively as some, in spite of the very full lower half, but it does pump well. Feels light in the hands once fully powered, and closes the gap very positively without jamming against the straps as some foil-specific sails would if sailed on a fin.

Setup was a PAIN. It took some fiddling with shims to get it to rotate at first - I wound up with double shims on the upper cam and none on the lower. The Point-7 method for setting the cams kinda works - downhaul to about 10cm, then pop the top cam on with your knee, but the lower cam needs you to outhaul fully, then release some downhaul, then pop it on. The tack strap, if tightened to the point where it can be buttoned up with its Velcro, is far too short and creates a crease in the bottom of the sail, but you can tighten slightly less and just finish off with couple of hitches. It's fussy with respect to batten tuning. Too much tension and the rotation is very abrupt, too little and it won't rotate at all (Andrea Cucchi recommends much less tension than most designers I think). Too little downhaul and it won't rotate at all, so you can't really set it up with a tight leech for foiling. There's no guide on the sail for downhaul but it's pretty intuitive - as with most Point-7 sails the leech looseness extends way in toward the luff and way down toward the boom. I generally set it for both fin and foil with the tack pulley 3cm from the rollers and then tune with outhaul. It likes to be rigged on port-tack but this makes the extension's clamcleat hard to engage, so you rig on port then flip it over to complete the downhauling.

Overall - hmmmm. I like it on a fin, very much, as long as there's enough wind. At my intermediate level it's fully the equivalent of any race sail and much faster than any no-cam I've been on. I like it on a foil too, but prefer my older Sailworks Flyer FR 8.5 which is friendlier and just as rangy. Because of the high end orientation of the Point-7 the two sails don't really overlap much - right around 13kt either would work fine. The Flyer FR can be used over a fin but isn't very satisfying - the F1e is. My even older 2018 Flyer 7.0 is much friendlier but doesn't cover as much range. I've sailed the Severne Foilglides and think the F1e has much more range and is better on a fin, at the cost of somewhat less low end on a foil. The F1e was a relative bargain on sale at the end of the year (and they're on sale again right now) so if you spend time in both disciplines and space is at a premium, it's a good investment if the fussy rigging isn't going to drive you nuts. Shipping from Italy to USA was relatively inexpensive and hassle-free.
