Hi All,
i just moved back to Adelaide from overseas. Is north haven better than semaphore for slalom? Which beach exactly in north haven?
Tnx

North Haven (Australia II Avenue) on a northerly is pretty flat for metro and nice cruisey sailing for about 2 hours, but it's fickle. Best works in June, July and early August. The most predictable day is the day the front comes in (the days before are unpredictable). Good luck and see you down there in winter. I'm the only guy that sails with slalom gear there now days.
I wouldn't bother using slalom gear at Sems unless that's all you've got. Although the inside at Sems near the rocks is pretty flat when the wind goes X/off. Good for gybes.
Boggy lake is good for slalom. It's fresh water and a big open area. You can touch just about everywhere but it's deep enough for big slalom fins. When it's windy there's normally crew out. Some days up to 15. Most on slalom gear. Best direction is either sw or ssw. Can't remember which of the two but can be sailed on both and others, (quite a few) and can still be fun on these other directions. If you google boggy lake you should be able to find directions. It's about 15 mins out of langhorne creek. Best way to go is freeway and take the monarto turn off and follow the the signs to langhorne creek until at the end of the 4th road (i think) you take there is a big green sign with an arrow pointing to wellington. You turn left at this sign and boggy lake is about 5 mins up the road on your right. You turn in to a paddock, there is a gate to it but i think its permanently open now. If it's not you can open it. Land is owned by government. Nice of them to let us use it for sailing. Just follow the dirt road to the landing. The gate is opposite a big two story house (red tiled roof) with a windmill on the front lawn. I think the roof is red tiled. There is windsurfing sicker or two on the gate to the paddock. I think they're still there. Any way you will see the track clearly marked when you enter the gate. Probably don't need to google directions now. It's good spot. Nice and peacefull too. You can camp there and have fire on cold days or if camping. Enjoy.
also, semaphore can be good for slalom on lowish tide. lower the better. still a bit choppy but still a bit of fun and it's more local than boggy lake. not gusty offshore like north haven. North haven alot flatter though. Sail it on s, ssw, sw,
Correction to directions above. The gate is opposite a large marone / red shed with two white stripes on the roof.
I've seen sailors bring their non-windsurfing missuses down to Boggy in summer and getting mauled by a million flies. I couldn't think of a better way to end a relationship.
I don't mind the el Bog in winter when it's westy. No other place works. It's not as choppy as summer. Water is pretty low at the start of winter (which makes it less choppy) and the inside is protected and flat to do some nice gybing. The water is very clean and no weed as well. No "Patawolonga Tang" taste or weed like you get in the gulf on a W or SW.
In winter, I don't get out much. It's about quantity not quality. If I sail half a day in winter, then I'm happy.
I've embarrassed you haven't I ? . I don't think you should be. You brought a lot of skills to Boggy last winter. It's always a pleasure having your company and I thought it was good of you taking time to give Leon some gybing tips .
JN1 maybe you should spend more time on the water instead of in front of your keyboard, racking up 1713 posts of nonsense on this forum just shows how out of touch you are to the SA windsurf conditions.
Everyone has a right to an opinion but yours are shockingly stupid.
Boggy lake will forever be a waste of time and effort.
Very original Ian. Well done. You have a work/life balance that lets you sail regularly in winter ?. Lucky you. Boggy works for me in winter when I only get out 2-4 times. I've already explained many times over the years when Russell or Bondy criticise. The audience of this topic isn't to you or the southern crew anyway. A new poster asks a slalom question. Boggy becomes the topic by Sam. I give an opinion about Boggy. Russell and you launch. Why do you or Russell care ?. I don't get it.
