Hi all,

i'm a windsurfer from VIC and planning a holiday in SA with family & all for a couple of weeks beginning of January.

I'm keen on bringing my windsurfing gear if the conditions allow it; i'm hoping you can help me with picking up the right gear for this time of year.

What should i expect in terms of conditions at this time of year? do you get north westerlies or more south westerlies? what are the spots most windsurfed at this time? what sizes do you sail the most?

I'm going to be based down Victor Harbour; i have seen some of photos / videos of Middleton, it looks sick, i'd love to catch some of those conditions... Fingers crossed.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Cheers,

Alex.

Middleton works best for wave sailing in a NW or W. Best conditions are in winter. In summer, it's often onshore S or SE down there. I don't know if the locals sail the onshore SE in summer down there. Now and then you might get a strong NW on a very hot day before a front in summer. Then it's 40 knots cross offshore and 40 degrees. Like sailing in a furnace.

In a big S, maybe head to Kent Reserve at Victor Harbor. Or check for Swell in the gulf and take a trip over to the Mid Coast. In a big SE also check for swell in the gulf and maybe head to Sellicks Beach. Super windy there.

Strongest winds in summer are the northern metro beaches like Semaphore. Mostly bump and jump up there.

Have a good trip, and I hope you get some time on the water.

Locals might like to correct or add to my take on things.

Hi Alex, hopefully your plans are still in place for SA. I'm not a local (Adelaide based) but plenty of coast and options on the south coast - Victor, Middleton, Goolwa (coast and river almost lake) or even Milang (lake). No guarantee of high wind but it has been firing over the last couple of months. And if you can bring some floaters then victor and rivers/lakes have flat spots to get the family having a crack.

Enjoy SA!
