I'm not a speed sailor and somewhat unqualified to assess, but on a camping trip to Petal point this week this beach looked fantastic.!
There are two beaches north of the Petal point camping area that face north west. They are very broad with ridiculously flat water
( flatter than stanley ) contrasting the huge swell on the east coast this week . The first beach is about 3km long and the second 1.5 km, plenty of room for a fast nautical mile. There is a four wheel drive track to the second beach which curves further to the west. ( check it out on Google earth ) Beautiful white sand with a gentle slope and about a 100 mtr of beach at low tide, but it would be great to sail at any tide. I wished that I brought my sailing gear with me but it was a 2 mum 7 kid camping mission and I thought supervision from the water may be a little risky. Drive time 90 minutes for Low Head. All the wind turbines on this point must indicate something about the amount of wind. It is such a low landscape that there is no shelter from the off shore conditions on the beach.
second beach north of the camping area ( low tide
first beach north of the camping area ( low tide )
looking south along the two beaches from the headland towards the southern camp site
over 40 wind turbines behind the beach
high tide on the first beach
high tide first beach
It was southerly whilst we were there. I think it would have potential in S , SE , E & SSW. As each beach faces a slightly different angle. And the whe bay was flat as a pancake for the three days we were camping.
