WINDSURFING TAS Season Calendar

Hello All
The 2017 - 2018 windsurfing season is here ! A few windy days have already been enjoyed in the North and the South with some inspiring images appearing on the Seabreeze forum. Fortunately the warmer weather is just around the corner for those who are holding out until the fingers and toes aren't so frozen.
Now that the club is formally incorporated the Calendar is fully packed. The unearthing of some fabulous old trophies such as the Marrawah cup and the Cape Country trophy will see these being awarded and engraved this year. Trophies will be allocated to the Northern and Southern Free race events and the King of the Tamar. A new youth event and and two learner days are also on the programme.
The calendar is a balance of Social, Freeride, Wave and GPS events. Hope this inspires a season of fun, competitive and social sailing.
If you would like to participate in any of the events contact numbers are provided with each event.
The details, meet times and on the day venues calls, will be discussed via the Seabreeze forum closer to their upcoming dates.

A few things to add

Titles will be awarded by the following calculations:
WAVESAILING (n=4) - points allocated as 0.7 for first, 2.0 for second, 3.0 for third, etc,
with results from best two rounds recorded.
Mens Wavesailing Title
Womens Wavesailing Title

GPS5 (n=5) - points allocated as 0.7 for first, 2.0 for second, 3.0 for third, etc, with best four rounds recorded
Open title

FREERACE (n=5)- points allocated as 0.7 for first, 2.0 for second, 3.0 for third, etc, with best four rounds recorded

This is a new event for TAS, which is a 1 hr set time at a set location, ( same as how it was run at Green Island. )

Free race 4 - King of the Tamar is first one across and back and then turns into a 1hr FREERACE
Free race 5 - Stanley long weekend

With a lot of sailors ordering foils for their windsurfers, all events are open to foils, ( it is just like having a different fin ), if winds are light, sailors can choose to use foils rather than bigger boards and sails. (Open to discussion here)

Also note the dash for cash is the Sandy Bay Regatta not the Hobart Regatta

I think foiling needs to have its own category. But having not ever foiled I'm not sure of its capabilities. To me it seems a whole new different ball game having a board out of the water compared to a board on the water.

Everybody knows how quickly Christmas comes around, right? Well shortly after Christmas is the Northern Wave-Sailing Event so make sure that you are prepared!

Get some of those new moves under your belt. A good water start and a successful gybe might just win you a competition, as well as a trophy! Get that ratty old board down to Relic and get the repairs done, and the right number of fin boxes put in (2). Replace all your ropes and universal joints, hit the gym and build up some muscle - breakages of any kind will not be considered a reasonable excuse, and sailing under duress may even get you some brownies.

Don't forget though - you have to compete in at least two events to qualify, so I am going to put my name down for the Men's Northern Wave-Sailing event, and the Womens Northern Wave-Sailing Event - I am sure that will all be okay.

Quite a season ahead for the brand new, squeaky clean, all above board (occasionally above board, but under more often) Windsurfing Tas club. Perhaps we should throw down the gauntlet to some of those Big Island clubs to come down and compete with us...for sheep stations.

Foils are going to improve light wind performance and therefore open up the opportunity to sail (or race) in those conditions. If we try to separate foils, I think we'll see windsurfing lose out in the long term. I can't see any reason not to include foils? It's just like choosing your board and sail size - in light winds you either go to a bigger board and sail or a foil? Putting foils in a separate category is only going to reduce the number of sailors racing on standard equipment. I think open it up and it will sort itself out.

The Sandy Bay Dash for cash will take on a new look with all the foils that will be in it. Should give that event a new lease of life and be great for spectators.

Ok so one is not a prime number for fins and probably has little retro charm unless you collect Spielberg movies....

I didn't realise until now, Round 3 of the wavesailing is held midweek on a Wednesday. I am in strong opposition that a state round of wave sailing be held at a time that is only accessible to those in the North. The argument that only 2 rounds go towards the wave sailing title should not even come into conversation, a state round needs to be accessible to all in the state. It's great to have the event, but I believe it should not be counted as a state round when held on this date.

Um, I am just wondering about the foil racing. I think including foils in the conventional board racing might be good, but I can say from experience, that foils are hard to control and I think as a result, can be potentially pretty dangerous. I think that people intending to race a foil probably should have some sort of level of proficiency, but how you administer that is going to be difficult.
I am willing to accept people will disagree with me on this one, but I would suggest that foils shouldn't be included in races until we see how the format and control/safety issues are able to be overcome. How do amateur comps get run O/S?
I certainly don't want it to look like I'm blowing my own trumpet, but I have a little bit of experience on a foil and I would not feel comfortable racing a conventional board next to myself on a foil. I don't feel comfortable doing that, but others might, and if they're out of control, then how do you deal with that? It might make some feel like they don't want to compete because there's a foil wielding maniac out there!

Not that i race but i think you are right there Marty. I certainly would not like to be lying at in the water at the marker buoy after a fallen Gybe with a guy on a foiling coming screaming down on me , potentially a bit out of control!.
From what i have observed it will take quite a bit of practice to be slightly competent going in a straight line and ever more at turning.
Mixing Non foilers with foilers could lead to problems.
If there was enough foilers they could have their own division, so they are all in the same boat then. I don,t think there will be enough foilers this season anyway.

Perhaps WT should reassess after the season, looking on to next?
