Hi guys,
Where would be the closest sailing spot for someone living in Avonsleigh ?
Is the inlet around the French Island sailable?
I.E. Koo We Rup and Lang Lang ?
Nothing at Koo Wee Rup or Lang Lang that we've found yet. Reef Island (Solders Rd) good in a NW or drive another 1/2h and sail at Inverloch. Make good friends with Doug as he's in your area

Cheers Kato.
62km to Reef Island, 82 to Inverloch...
How is the area between Beaumaris and Frankston?
BTW, I'm not there yet.
My wife is looking into moving there. She wants to live in a green and lush environment , and I in a"blue and lush" and windy ...
Hi Obelix,
I live in Avonsleigh!! Have done so for 20 years. Wife and daughter into horses. Agree with your wife's summation of green. So what are you doing coming from WA and trying to Windsurf in Avonsleigh
Closest water is Lysterfield Park Lake - 20 minutes away. Only works on a honking Northerly. Mate and I have sailed there when we have both been on the same tack heading for each other!!!!
1 Hours drive to Port Phillip Bay or
1 1/2 hours drive to Inverloch
I choose Inverloch. Choice of gentle surf break. Flat water haven - nominated as one of the top 50 flat water spots in the world!!. Bump and Jump on mid to high tide. Sand bars everywhere so a safe place for beginners. Can also be challenging for intermediates and advanced. Gets a diamond shaped chop happening from all directions when the tide runs against the wind. Local windsurfing club has 200 plus members, full of great characters, friendly and always has something happening - whether it is a social sail or an organised event.
On Sunday the Club had its Longboard Challenge - a family fun day, which was sadly cancelled due to strong wind and rain!!! So the Club organised a social sailing day and BBQ with about 20 odd people rocking up. Great day and friendly mob.
Inverloch will work best with any wind direction that does not have North in it. Very gusty. For those times I head West to Swan Bay.(Queenscliff) Another flat water haven. 2 1/2 hour drive from Avonsleigh but sweet sweet flat water. Locals are a bit of a worry and you need booties - sea urchins, and a weed fin. When the wind hits 15 kts you will always see 6 plus windsurfers out there.
PM me if you want the inside on Avonsleigh
Cheers Old Salty.
Appreciate such a detailed response.
Avonsleigh!sounds really great.
Basically we are looking for a cooler climate. Tassie is of interest, as well as Victoria, so we are checking the houses in both places.
Also, our son lives in Melbourne...
I'm into water sports, but also like hiking so looking for place where I can have it all
We are heading over in late June, early July so we'll check the area then drive to Inverloch to "experience" what I'll have to deal with.
I would like learn more about the area.
I'll PM you tomorrow.
Thanks again.
There's also there's the Pit 2.5 hrs down the road.
Where is the Pit?
Sandy point, flat water heaven
Near Waratah bay and Shallow Inlet. Google Earth will help
Cheers Kato.
Will have a look tonight.
Looks great.
Sailing inside the inlet? Is that what you call "the Pit" ?
What about that big inlet on the right (Corner Inlet) ?

Driving to all these places is easy, dual lane most of the way, car ferries and plenty of coffee stops on the way.
Soldiers Rd, Bass. Interesting place. I've sailed here on northearly, thru west to southerlies. Isolated, but macca's at the other end of the road. Limited rigging area, but when northerly winds blow it works a treat. No kites, but ya have to sometimes share the water with the local horses.
Inverloch, Andersons Inlet. Everywhere you can see is sailable, depending of wind direction and tides. Northerlies are gusty and challenging, but good surf can be had. Very popular and can get quite busy on the water when conditions are good, especially at low tide: boats, jet skis, kites, swimmers and the odd tractor tire full of kids. Heaps accomodation and good food to be had. That Kato fella broke 40knots here.
Swan Bay, Queenscliff. This place is awesome. Works on any direction, but most fun when west thru to northerly. I've seen this place with 50knot winds and water spouts and only half foot of chop, next to mud bars flat as. Miles in every direction at high tide. The yellow square is the launch spot, QLYC; they grew the grass for us to rig on. Need weed fins and booties. The Connewarre Cremasters often sail here, awesome chaps.
Sandy Point. Super sonic speeds have been done here. Park on the beach at low tide. Get out as the tide fills. The Pit Crew can fill you in on winds and tides.
All great places to sail with heaps of people to share the stoke with
Cheers Pete

The area around Esperance in WA is probably the closest to this.
You said you enjoy walking..the hikes at the prom are awesome and i can highly recommend staying at the lighthouse during your walk. One of my favourite memories of the numerous walks around the prom
